स वीर्यवान् कथं सीतां हृतां समनुमन्यसे ।
वसन्तीं रक्षसां मध्ये महेन्द्रवरुणोपमः ।

sa vīryavān kathaṃ sītāṃ hṛtāṃ samanumanyase |
vasantīṃ rakṣasāṃ madhye mahendravaruṇopamaḥ ॥5-40-6॥
Translation
Being powerful like Mahendra (Indra) and Varuna, how do you overlook Sita who has been abducted and is living amidst the Rakshasas?

आप तो इंद्र और वरुण के समान तेजस्वी हैं। फिर आप राक्षसों के बीच में रहती हुई अपनी अपहृत सीता की उपेक्षा कैसे कर रहे हैं (इसे कैसे सहन कर रहे हैं)?
English Commentary
Sita questions Rama's seeming passivity with a tone of bewildered grief. Comparing him to the highest cosmic powers, Mahendra and Varuna, she highlights the dissonance between his capacity and his current lack of action. The phrase kathaṃ samanumanyase translates effectively to "how do you allow/tolerate this?" She emphasizes her wretched condition—living rakṣasāṃ madhye (in the midst of demons)—to prick his conscience. This is not a doubt of his capability but a desperate query into his will. It serves as a motivational challenge, intended to rouse the warrior spirit in Rama by contrasting his divine-like status with the humiliation of his wife's captivity.

यहाँ सीता जी का स्वर प्रश्नवाचक और उपालम्भ (शिकायत) पूर्ण है। वे राम की तुलना 'महेन्द्र' (देवराज इन्द्र) और 'वरुण' से करती हैं, जो सत्ता और शक्ति के प्रतीक हैं। 'समनुमन्यसे' का अर्थ यहाँ 'सहन करना' या 'उपेक्षा करना' है। सीता जी यह नहीं मानतीं कि राम कायर हैं, बल्कि वे हैरान हैं कि सर्वशक्तिमान होते हुए भी वे अपनी पत्नी को राक्षसों के बीच (रक्षसां मध्ये) कैसे छोड़ सकते हैं। यह प्रश्न राम के पौरुष को ललकारने के लिए है ताकि वे शीघ्र लंका पर आक्रमण करें। यह एक क्षत्राणी का अपने पति को धर्म और कर्तव्य पालन के लिए प्रेरित करने वाला कथन है।
