इदामस्य नृशंसस्य नन्दनोपममुत्तमम् ।
वनं नेत्रमनःकान्तं नानाद्रुमलतायुतम् ।

idamasya nṛśaṃsasya nandanopamamuttamam |
vanaṃ netramanaḥkāntaṃ nānādrumalatāyutam ॥5-41-10॥
Translation
This excellent forest of the cruel (Ravana), comparable to the Nandanavana (of Indra), is pleasing to the eyes and mind, and filled with various trees and creepers.

इस क्रूर (नृशंस) रावण का यह उत्तम वन (अशोक वाटिका), जो इन्द्र के नन्दनवन के समान है, नेत्रों और मन को प्रिय लगने वाला है तथा नाना प्रकार के वृक्षों और लताओं से भरा हुआ है।
English Commentary
Hanuman identifies his target: the Ashoka Vatika itself. He describes it as nandanopamam (comparable to Indra's celestial garden) and pleasing to the senses (netramanaḥkāntaṃ). However, he notes it belongs to the nṛśaṃsasya (cruel/wicked) Ravana. By targeting something aesthetically perfect and deeply cherished by the tyrant, Hanuman ensures maximum psychological impact. The description serves to contrast the current beauty of the garden with the imminent destruction Hanuman plans, highlighting the severity of the blow he is about to deal to Ravana’s pride and property.

हनुमान जी ने युद्ध के लिए 'ट्रिगर' (उकसावे) के रूप में अशोक वाटिका को चुना है। वे इस वन की सुंदरता का वर्णन करते हैं—यह 'नन्दनोपमम्' (स्वर्ग के नन्दन वन जैसा) और 'नेत्रमनःकान्तं' (आँखों और मन को भाने वाला) है। परन्तु यह वन 'नृशंसस्य' (क्रूर रावण) का है। रावण को यह वाटिका अत्यंत प्रिय है। किसी की सबसे प्रिय वस्तु को नष्ट करना उसे क्रोधित करने का सबसे अचूक उपाय है। यहाँ सौंदर्य वर्णन का उद्देश्य उस वस्तु के महत्व को स्थापित करना है जिसे अगले ही पल नष्ट किया जाने वाला है।
