कार्ये कर्मणि निर्दिष्टे यो बहून्यपि साधयेत् ।
पूर्वकार्याविरोधेन स कार्यं कर्तुमर्हति ।

kārye karmaṇi nirdiṣṭe yo bahūnyapi sādhayet |
pūrvakāryāvirodhena sa kāryaṃ kartumarhati ॥5-41-5॥
Translation
When a task has been assigned, he who accomplishes many other tasks as well, without conflicting with the primary objective, is truly capable of performing the duty.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(स्वामी द्वारा) किसी एक कार्य के निर्धारित किए जाने पर, जो दूत उस मुख्य कार्य (पूर्वकार्य) के विरोध के बिना (उसमें बाधा ड़ाले बिना) अन्य भी बहुत से कार्य सिद्ध कर लेता है, वही वास्तव में कार्य करने योग्य (सच्चा सेवक) है।
English Commentary
This verse formulates a classic maxim of management and duty. It defines a superior agent as one who, while executing the assigned mission (nirdiṣṭe karmaṇi), achieves multiple value-added goals (bahūnyapi sādhayet). The critical constraint is pūrvakāryāvirodhena—these additional actions must not jeopardize the primary mission (finding and protecting Sita). Hanuman uses this logic to justify his planned rampage: he sees it as an opportunity to gain strategic intelligence and damage the enemy, thereby exceeding the baseline expectations of his mission without compromising its core success.

यह श्लोक 'सेवक धर्म' और 'कार्य कुशलता' (Efficiency) का एक प्रसिद्ध सूत्र (Aphorism) है। हनुमान जी सोचते हैं कि राम ने उन्हें केवल सीता को खोजने का कार्य दिया था, जो 'पूर्वकार्य' (प्राथमिक कार्य) है। वह पूरा हो चुका है। अब यदि वे लंका में कुछ अतिरिक्त कार्य (जैसे शत्रु बल का अनुमान लगाना, विनाश करना) करते हैं, तो वह तभी उचित है जब उससे सीता की सुरक्षा खतरे में न पड़े ('पूर्वकार्याविरोधेन')। यह एक आदर्श कर्मचारी/भक्त की परिभाषा है जो केवल आदेश का पालन नहीं करता, बल्कि स्वामी के हित में पहल (Initiative) भी करता है।
