ततः पक्षिनिनादेन वृक्षभङ्गस्वनेन च ।
बभूवुस्त्राससंभ्रान्ताः सर्वे लङ्कानिवासिनः ।

Tataḥ pakṣininādena vṛkṣabhaṅgasvanena ca |
Babhūvustrāsasaṃbhrāntāḥ sarve laṅkānivāsinaḥ ॥5-42-1॥
Translation
Then, due to the screeching of birds and the crashing sound of breaking trees, all the residents of Lanka became bewildered with fear.

तदनन्तर, पक्षियों के कोलाहल और वृक्षों के टूटने की भारी आवाज से लंका के सभी निवासी भय से व्याकुल हो उठे।
English Commentary
The opening of Sarga 42 shifts focus from Hanuman to the reaction of the general populace of Lanka. The auditory impact of the destruction—screeching birds and snapping timber—serves as an alarm. The phrase sarve laṅkānivāsinaḥ (all residents of Lanka) implies that the disturbance was massive enough to shake the entire city, not just the palace grounds. It marks the penetration of fear into the impregnable fortress of the Rakshasas.

सर्ग 42 का आरम्भ लंका में व्याप्त भय के चित्रण से होता है। हनुमान जी द्वारा किया गया विध्वंस इतना प्रचण्ड था कि उसकी ध्वनि केवल अशोक वाटिका तक सीमित नहीं रही, बल्कि पूरी लंका नगरी में गूँज उठी। 'त्राससंभ्रान्ताः' (डर से घबराए हुए) शब्द यह स्पष्ट करता है कि लंकावासी, जो अब तक सुरक्षित महसूस करते थे, अचानक असुरक्षित हो गए। यह ध्वनि रावण के पतन की प्रथम घोषणा है।
