विद्रुताश्च भयत्रस्ता विनेडुर्मृगपक्षिणः ।
रक्षसां च निमित्तानि क्रूराणि प्रतिपेदिरे ।

Vidrutāśca bhayatrastā vinedurmṛgapakṣiṇaḥ |
Rakṣasāṃ ca nimittāni krūrāṇi pratipedire ॥5-42-2॥
Translation
Terrified animals and birds ran helter-skelter and cried out. Cruel omens signifying bad luck for the Rakshasas began to appear.

भयभीत होकर पशु और पक्षी इधर-उधर भागने और चिल्लाने लगे। राक्षसों के लिए (अशुभ सूचक) क्रूर अपशकुन प्रकट होने लगे।
English Commentary
The chaos in the animal kingdom serves as a harbinger of doom for the Rakshasas. The verse connects the physical panic of the beasts (mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ) with metaphysical signs (nimittāni). In the epic context, nature often reacts to the presence of immense power or impending dharma-yuddha (righteous war). The "cruel omens" suggest that the destruction of the garden is not an isolated incident but the beginning of the end for the Rakshasa clan.

भारतीय साहित्य में प्रकृति और भविष्य का गहरा संबंध माना गया है। पशु-पक्षियों का भयभीत होकर चिल्लाना (विनेदुः) एक प्राकृतिक प्रतिक्रिया है, लेकिन वाल्मीकि जी इसे 'निमित्तानि क्रूराणि' (क्रूर शकुन) से जोड़ते हैं। यह केवल भौतिक उथल-पुथल नहीं है, बल्कि दैवीय संकेत है कि राक्षसों का बुरा समय आ गया है। पशु-पक्षियों का असामान्य व्यवहार अक्सर आने वाली बड़ी विपत्ति का पूर्वसंकेत माना जाता है।
