राक्षसीनां वचः श्रुत्वा रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः ।
हुताग्निरिव जज्वाल कोपसंवर्तितेक्षणः ।
।
॥५-४२-२२॥
Rākṣasīnāṃ vacaḥ śrutvā rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ |
Hutāgniriva jajvāla kopasaṃvartitekṣaṇaḥ ॥5-42-22॥
Translation
Hearing the words of the Rakshasis, Ravana, the Lord of Rakshasas, blazed up like a sacrificial fire. His eyes rolled in anger.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राक्षसियों के वचन सुनकर राक्षसेश्वर रावण हवन की गई अग्नि के समान प्रज्वलित हो उठा। क्रोध से उसके नेत्र घूमने लगे।
English Commentary
Ravana's reaction is swift and severe. The metaphor hutāgniriva (like a ritual fire fed with oblations) vividly captures Ravana's sudden flare of rage. The report acts as the fuel. His physical reaction—kopasaṃvartitekṣaṇaḥ (eyes rolling/distorted in anger)—signifies a loss of composure. In Sanskrit poetics, the eyes are the windows to the rasa (emotional flavor); here, they project pure Raudra (fury). This marks the transition from the messenger's report to the king's active retaliation.

रावण की प्रतिक्रिया त्वरित और भीषण है। 'हुताग्निरिव' (आहुति पड़ी हुई अग्नि के समान) उपमा यह दर्शाती है कि राक्षसियों के वचनों ने घी का काम किया और रावण का क्रोध भड़क उठा। 'कोपसंवर्तितेक्षणः' (क्रोध से आँखें घुमाना) रौद्र रस का स्थाई भाव है। यह शारीरिक प्रतिक्रिया बताती है कि सीता के साथ किसी और का संवाद रावण के लिए असहनीय है। यह श्लोक रावण के तामसी स्वभाव और असंयमित क्रोध का परिचय देता है।
