स ता दृष्ट्वा महाबाहूर्महासत्त्वो महाबलः ।
चकार सुमहद्रूपं राक्षसीनां भयावहम् ।

Sa tā dṛṣṭvā mahābāhurmahāsattvo mahābalaḥ |
Cakāra sumahadrūpaṃ rākṣasīnāṃ bhayāvaham ॥5-42-4॥
Translation
Seeing them, the mighty-armed, great-spirited, and immensely powerful Hanuman assumed a colossal form that was terrifying to the Rakshasis.

उन राक्षसियों को देखकर महाबाहु, महासत्त्व (महान धैर्यशाली) और महाबली हनुमान ने अपना रूप अत्यंत विशाल और राक्षसियों के लिए भय उत्पन्न करने वाला बना लिया।
English Commentary
Hanuman employs a tactic of intimidation here. Upon noticing the guards, instead of fleeing or hiding, he deliberately expands his size (cakāra sumahadrūpaṃ). The epithets mahābāhu (mighty-armed) and mahāsattva (great vitality/courage) emphasize that this transformation is backed by genuine power and intent. He becomes bhayāvaham (terrifying) specifically to strike panic into the Rakshasis, ensuring that the report reaching Ravana describes a monster of cataclysmic proportions rather than a mere pest.

हनुमान जी यहाँ 'साम' और 'दाम' नीति को छोड़कर 'भेद' और 'दंड' की ओर बढ़ रहे हैं। राक्षसियों को भयभीत करने के लिए उन्होंने जानबूझकर अपना शरीर विशाल (सुमहद्रूपं) कर लिया। 'महासत्त्व' का अर्थ यहाँ महान आत्मबल और धैर्य से है। वे डरे नहीं, बल्कि उन्होंने डराया। यह मनोवैज्ञानिक युद्ध (Psychological Warfare) का हिस्सा है। वे चाहते हैं कि ये राक्षसियाँ जाकर रावण को एक साधारण वानर की नहीं, बल्कि एक असाधारण दैवीय शक्ति के आगमन की सूचना दें।
