ततस्तं गिरिसङ्काशमतिकायं महाबलम् ।
राक्षस्यो वानरं दृष्ट्वा पप्रच्छुर्जनकात्मजाम् ।
।
॥५-४२-५॥
Tatastaṃ girisaṅkāśamatikāyaṃ mahābalam |
Rākṣasyo vānaraṃ dṛṣṭvā papracchurjanakātmajām ॥5-42-5॥
Translation
Then, seeing that monkey of massive body, resembling a mountain and possessing great strength, the Rakshasis questioned the daughter of Janaka (Sita).

तब पर्वत के समान विशालकाय और महाबली उस वानर को देखकर राक्षसियों ने जनकपुत्री सीता से पूछा।
English Commentary
The sheer scale of Hanuman, described as girisaṅkāśam (resembling a mountain), paralyzes the Rakshasis from engaging him directly. Their fear redirects their inquiry toward the captive, Sita. They turn to Janakātmajām (Janaka's daughter), assuming a connection between the intruder and the captive. This moment highlights the Rakshasis' confusion; faced with an overwhelming force, they seek information from the most vulnerable person present, suspecting complicity.

हनुमान जी का रूप अब 'गिरिसङ्काशम्' (पर्वत के समान) हो गया है। राक्षसियाँ इतनी भयभीत हो गईं कि उनमें सीधे हनुमान जी से प्रश्न करने का साहस नहीं हुआ। उन्होंने देखा था (या अनुमान लगाया था) कि इस वानर ने सीता से बात की थी, इसलिए वे मध्यस्थ के रूप में सीता जी से ही पूछताछ करने लगीं। 'जनकात्मजाम्' शब्द सीता जी की कुलीनता और सत्यवादिता को इंगित करता है, शायद इसीलिए राक्षसियों को लगा कि वे उत्तर देंगी।
