अथाब्रवीत्तदा साध्वी सीता सर्वाङ्गसुन्दरी ।
रक्षसां भीमरूपाणां विज्ञाने मम का गतिः ।
।
॥५-४२-८॥
Athābravīttadā sādhvī sītā sarvāṅgasundarī |
Rakṣasāṃ bhīmarūpāṇāṃ vijñāne mama kā gatiḥ ॥5-42-8॥
Translation
Then, the virtuous Sita, beautiful in every limb, replied: "What ability do I have to understand demons of terrible form?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब सर्वांगसुन्दरी साध्वी सीता ने कहा—"भयानक रूप वाले राक्षसों (की माया) को जानने में मेरी क्या गति (सामर्थ्य) हो सकती है?"
English Commentary
Sita displays immense strategic wisdom here. Instead of revealing Hanuman's identity as Rama's messenger, she pleads ignorance, categorizing Hanuman as just another shape-shifting entity of Lanka. By asking rhetorically, "What capacity (kā gatiḥ) do I have to know Rakshasas?", she distances herself from the intruder. This protects Hanuman from immediate identification as an enemy spy and protects herself from being accused of conspiring with the enemy.
हिंदी टीका
सीता जी यहाँ अद्भुत प्रत्युत्पन्नमतित्व (Presence of mind) का परिचय देती हैं। यदि वे स्वीकार करतीं कि यह रामदूत है, तो हनुमान जी पर तुरंत घातक प्रहार होता। इसलिए, उन्होंने अनजान बनने का नाटक किया। उन्होंने हनुमान जी को 'राक्षस' की श्रेणी में ही डाल दिया। उनका तर्क यह है कि वह स्वयं मानवी हैं, अतः वह राक्षसों की मायावी दुनिया और उनके रूप बदलने की विद्या को कैसे समझ सकती हैं? यह उत्तर कूटनीतिक और रक्षात्मक दोनों है।
