यूयमेवाभिजानीत यो ऽयं यद्वा करिष्यति ।
अहिरेव ह्यहेः पादान् विजानाति न संशयः ।
।
॥५-४२-९॥
Yūyamevābhijānīta yo 'yaṃ yadvā kariṣyati |
Ahireva hyaheḥ pādān vijānāti na saṃśayaḥ ॥5-42-9॥
Translation
"You yourselves should determine who he is and what he intends to do. For undoubtedly, only a serpent knows the feet of a serpent."

"तुम लोग ही जानो कि यह कौन है और क्या करेगा; क्योंकि (कहावत है कि) साँप के पैर साँप ही जानता है, इसमें कोई संशय नहीं है।"
English Commentary
Sita employs a classic idiom: "Only a snake knows a snake's feet" (ahireva hyaheḥ pādān vijānāti). By using this proverb, she deftly turns the tables on the Rakshasis. She implies that since the intruder possesses magical, shape-shifting powers (like the Rakshasas), he must be one of their own kind or kin. Therefore, they are better equipped to understand him than she is. This creates ambiguity about Hanuman’s origin, buying time and sowing confusion among the guards.

यह श्लोक एक प्रसिद्ध लोकोक्ति का मूल है—'अहिरेव ह्यहेः पादान् विजानाति' (साँप के पैर साँप ही पहचानता है)। सीता जी का आशय है कि यह वानर भी तुम लोगों (राक्षसों) जैसा ही कोई मायावी जीव है, इसलिए तुम ही इसे बेहतर समझ सकती हो। यह कहकर उन्होंने बड़ी चतुराई से हनुमान जी को 'शत्रु' के बजाय 'राक्षसों का ही कोई रूप' बताकर भ्रम उत्पन्न कर दिया। यह वाक्य उनकी वाक्पटुता और संकट काल में धैर्य का प्रमाण है।
