तम तोरणविटङ्कस्थं हनुमन्तं महाकपिम् ।
जम्बुमाली महाबाहुर्विव्याध निशितैः शरैः ।

Taṃ toraṇaviṭaṅkasthaṃ Hanumantaṃ mahākapim . Jambumālī mahābāhurvivyādha niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ .. ॥5-44-6॥
Translation
The mighty-armed Jambumali pierced the great monkey Hanuman, who was stationed on the archway's pinnacle, with sharp arrows.

तोरण के ऊपर (छज्जे पर) बैठे हुए उस महाकपि हनुमान को महाबाहु जम्बुमाली ने तीखे बाणों से बेध दिया।
English Commentary
Jambumali initiates the physical combat with precision. Hanuman is perched high on the toraṇaviṭaṅka (the cornice or top of the archway), usually a position of advantage. However, Jambumali, described as mahābāhuḥ (mighty-armed), successfully strikes him. The use of the verb vivyādha (pierced) indicates a successful hit, piercing Hanuman's defenses. This validates Ravana's choice of champion; Jambumali possesses the skill to target an agile, elevated opponent with sharp arrows (niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ). It sets the stakes: Hanuman is not invulnerable, and this battle requires effort.

युद्ध का आरंभ जम्बुमाली के आक्रमण से होता है। हनुमान जी तोरण (मुख्य द्वार) के विटंक (ऊपरी भाग) पर बैठे हैं, जो रणनीतिक रूप से ऊँचा स्थान है। जम्बुमाली 'महाबाहु' है, अर्थात उसकी भुजाओं में धनुष खींचने की अपार शक्ति है। उसने 'निशितैः शरैः' (तीखे बाणों) का प्रयोग किया। 'विव्याध' (बेध दिया) क्रिया बताती है कि जम्बुमाली का निशाना अचूक था और उसने हनुमान जी को वास्तव में चोट पहुँचाई। यह सिद्ध करता है कि जम्बुमाली उन पिछले योद्धाओं जैसा नहीं है जो हनुमान को छू भी नहीं पाए थे; वह उन्हें घायल करने में सक्षम है।
