हतान् मन्त्रिसुतान् बुद्ध्वा वानरेण महात्मना ।
रावणः संवृताकारश्चकार मतिमुत्तमाम् ।
।

Hatān mantrisutān buddhvā vānareṇa mahātmanā । Rāvaṇaḥ saṃvṛtākāraścakāra matimuttamām । । ॥5-46-1॥
Translation
Learning that the ministers' sons had been killed by the high-souled Vanara, Ravana, concealing his emotions/appearance, formed a superior resolve.

महात्मा वानर द्वारा मंत्री-पुत्रों को मारा गया जानकर, रावण ने अपने मनोभावों (आकार) को छिपाते हुए उत्तम विचार किया।
English Commentary
This verse opens the 46th Sarga with a focus on Ravana's leadership psychology. Upon hearing of the significant loss of the ministers' sons, Ravana displays saṃvṛtākāra—he effectively masks his internal turmoil. A king cannot afford to show panic in court. This stoicism is a mark of his experience as a ruler. He realizes that brute force alone is failing against this 'high-souled' (mahatmana) Vanara. The phrase cakāra matim uttamām (made up his mind excellently/decided on a superior course) indicates a shift from sending wave after wave of soldiers to selecting a more specialized, elite task force. He is now treating the threat with the gravity it deserves.

यहाँ से 46वां सर्ग आरम्भ होता है। रावण की प्रतिक्रिया एक कुशल राजनीतिज्ञ और राजा जैसी है। 'संवृताकारः' अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण शब्द है—इसका अर्थ है अपने भय या चिंता को चेहरे पर न आने देना। राजा यदि घबरा जाए तो सेना का मनोबल टूट जाता है, इसलिए रावण ने अपने भावों को गुप्त रखा। यद्यपि वह भीतर से चिंतित है, बाहरी रूप से वह शांत बना रहा। उसने 'मतिमुत्तमाम्' (उत्तम बुद्धि/निर्णय) का प्रयोग किया, जिसका अर्थ है कि उसने अब आवेश में न आकर गंभीरता से सोचना शुरू किया कि इस वानर को कैसे रोका जाए। उसने स्थिति की गंभीरता को स्वीकार कर लिया है।
