तोरणस्थं महोत्साहं महासत्त्वं महाबलम् ।
महामतिं महावेगं महाकायं महाबलम् ।
।
॥५-४६-१८॥
Toraṇasthaṃ mahotsāhaṃ mahāsattvaṃ mahābalam । Mahāmatiṃ mahāvegaṃ mahākāyaṃ mahābalam । । ॥5-46-18॥
Translation
(They saw him) perched on the archway, of great enthusiasm, great being/essence, great strength, great intellect, great speed, huge body, and mighty power.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(उन्होंने देखा) तोरण पर बैठे हुए, महान उत्साह वाले, महान सत्व (बल/धैर्य) वाले, महाबली, महाबुद्धिमान, महावेगवान, विशाल शरीर वाले और महान शक्ति से संपन्न (हनुमान को)।
English Commentary
This verse is a crescendo of attributes, using the rhetorical device of repetition to emphasize magnitude. The prefix Maha (Great) is attached to every quality: Utsaha (enthusiasm/energy), Sattva (essence/courage), Bala (strength), Mati (mind), Vega (speed), and Kaya (body). Seeing him Toranastham (stationed on the archway) places him physically above the army, looking down. The repetition of Mahabalam at the end (in this recension) drives home the point: he is the embodiment of raw power. It captures the psychological impact on the generals—they are facing a foe who is 'Great' in every conceivable dimension of warfare.

इस श्लोक में 'महा' शब्द की आवृत्ति (repetition) हनुमान जी के व्यक्तित्व की विराटता को प्रतिपादित करती है। वे तोरण पर विराजमान हैं जैसे कोई राजा सिंहासन पर हो। कवि वाल्मीकि विशेषणों की झड़ी लगा देते हैं: महोत्साह (जिसका उत्साह कम न हुआ हो), महासत्त्व (महान प्राणी), महाबल, महामति (रणनीतिकार), महावेग (फुर्तीला) और महाकाय (विशाल शरीर)। अंतिम चरण में 'महाबलम्' की पुनरावृत्ति (कुछ पाठों में 'महागुणम्' भी मिलता है) इस बात पर जोर देती है कि शक्ति ही उनका प्रधान गुण है। यह राक्षसों के दृष्टिकोण से हनुमान का 'विश्वरूप' दर्शन है, जो उन्हें भयभीत भी करता है और विस्मित भी।
