Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तं समीक्ष्यैव ते सर्वे दिक्षु सर्वास्ववस्थिताः ।
तैस्तैः प्रहरणैर्भीमैरभिपेतुस्ततस्ततः ।
।
॥५-४६-१९॥
Taṃ samīkṣyaiva te sarve dikṣu sarvāsvavasthitāḥ । Taistaiḥ praharaṇairbhīmairabhipetustatastataḥ । । ॥5-46-19॥
Translation
Upon merely seeing him, all of them positioned themselves in all directions and attacked him from here and there with various terrible weapons.

उस वानर (हनुमान) को देखते ही वे सभी (पाँचों सेनानायक) सब दिशाओं में डट गए और भाँति-भाँति के भयानक अस्त्रों से इधर-उधर से उन पर टूट पड़े।
English Commentary
The battle commences with a tactical encirclement. Following Ravana's orders to be strategic, the generals do not attack head-on in a cluster but fan out to cover 'all directions' (dikshu sarvasu). This creates a kill zone aimed at the archway where Hanuman is perched. The phrase abhipetuh (they rushed/attacked) indicates simultaneous aggression. The variety of 'terrible weapons' implies a barrage of missiles—arrows, spears, and clubs—intended to overwhelm Hanuman’s defenses through sheer volume and multi-directional strikes.

युद्ध का शुभारम्भ घेराबंदी से होता है। रावण के आदेशानुसार, ये पाँचों सेनानायक नीति-निपुण हैं, इसलिए उन्होंने हनुमान जी को एक दिशा से घेरने के बजाय 'दिक्षु सर्वासु' (सभी दिशाओं) से घेर लिया। इसका उद्देश्य हनुमान के भागने या बचने के सभी मार्ग बंद करना था। 'तैस्तैः प्रहरणैः' का अर्थ है कि वे अपने-अपने विशिष्ट और भयानक हथियारों का प्रयोग कर रहे थे। यह एक समन्वित आक्रमण (coordinated attack) है। हनुमान जी तोरण पर अकेले हैं और चारों ओर से प्रहार हो रहे हैं, जो उनकी वीरता की परीक्षा की घड़ी है।
