न ह्यहं तं कपिं मन्ये कर्मणा प्रतितर्कयन् ।
सर्वथा तन्महद्भूतं महाबलपरिग्रहम् ।
भवेदिन्द्रेण वा सृष्टमस्मदर्थं तपोबलात् ।

॥५-४६-६॥
Na hyahaṃ taṃ kapiṃ manye karmaṇā pratitarkayan । Sarvathā tanmahadbhūtaṃ mahābalaparigraham । Bhavedindreṇa vā sṛṣṭamasmadarthaṃ tapoabalāt । । ॥5-46-6॥
Translation
"Judging by his actions, I do not consider him to be a (mere) monkey. By all means, he is a great being possessing mighty strength. Or perhaps he has been created by Indra through the power of penance for our sake (our destruction)."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"उसके कार्यों पर विचार करते हुए, मैं उसे साधारण वानर नहीं मानता। वह निश्चय ही कोई महान प्राणी (महाभूत) है जिसने विशाल बल धारण किया हुआ है। अथवा संभव है कि मेरे विनाश के लिए इन्द्र ने अपने तपोबल से इसे रचा हो।"
English Commentary
In this insightful verse, Ravana analyzes the nature of his enemy. He explicitly rejects the classification of Hanuman as a regular kapi (monkey) based on the empirical evidence of his deeds (karmana). He hypothesizes that this is a mahad-bhutam—a great, supernatural being or element encasing immense power. His suspicion turns to his old rival, Indra. Ravana speculates that this being might be a weapon created by Indra's tapas (ascetic power) specifically asmad-artham (for our sake/destruction). This reveals Ravana's worldview: he sees threats in the context of his past cosmic rivalries, failing to recognize the new threat from humanity (Rama), yet correctly identifying the divine magnitude of the opposition.

रावण के मन में गहरा संदेह उत्पन्न हो गया है। हनुमान के 'कर्मणा' (कार्यों/पराक्रम) को देखकर वह समझ गया है कि यह सामान्य वानर नहीं हो सकता। वह उसे 'महद्भूतं' (कोई महान सत्व/प्राणी) कह रहा है। रावण का अपराधबोध और पुराना डर भी यहाँ झलकता है—उसे लगता है कि शायद इन्द्र ने (जिसे रावण ने हराया था) अपने तपोबल से इसे उत्पन्न किया है। वह अभी भी सत्य (कि यह विष्णु/राम का दूत है) तक नहीं पहुँचा है, किन्तु उसे यह आभास हो गया है कि यह संकट अलौकिक है। यह श्लोक रावण की अंतर्दृष्टि और उसके अंतर्मन में छिपे भय को उजागर करता है।
