Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नावमान्यो भवद्भिश्च हरिर्धीरपराक्रमः ।
दृष्टा हि हरयः पूर्वं मया विपुलविक्रमाः ।
।
॥५-४६-९॥
Nāvamānyo bhavadbhiśca harirdhīraparākramaḥ । Dṛṣṭā hi harayaḥ pūrvaṃ mayā vipulavikramāḥ । । ॥5-46-9॥
Translation
And this Vanara of steadfast valor should not be disregarded/underestimated by you. Indeed, monkeys of immense prowess have been seen by me in the past.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आप लोगों को इस धीर और पराक्रमी वानर का अपमान (तिरस्कार/अनादर) नहीं करना चाहिए। मैंने पहले भी महान पराक्रम वाले वानर देखे हैं।
English Commentary
Ravana displays strategic prudence by warning his generals against complacency. The phrase na avamanyo (must not be disregarded/despised) is crucial; usually, demons view monkeys as inferior creatures. However, Ravana, being a seasoned warrior, acknowledges that he has witnessed powerful simians before. He characterizes Hanuman as dhira-parakramah (one of steadfast/resolute valor), indicating that he recognizes Hanuman's mental stability along with his physical strength. This verse serves as a briefing on the enemy profile: do not let your racial superiority complex blind you to the actual threat level of this opponent.

रावण यहाँ यथार्थवादी दृष्टिकोण अपना रहा है। वह अपने सेनापतियों को चेतावनी देता है कि वे शत्रु को छोटा समझने की भूल न करें ('नावमान्यो')। 'धीरपराक्रमः' विशेषण हनुमान के लिए रावण के मन में उपजे अनचाहे सम्मान को दर्शाता है। रावण अपने अनुभव से बोल रहा है; उसने अपने लम्बे जीवनकाल में अनेक योद्धा देखे हैं। वह स्वीकार करता है कि वानर जाति में भी 'विपुलविक्रमाः' (विशाल पराक्रम वाले) वीर होते हैं। यह चेतावनी इसलिए आवश्यक है क्योंकि राक्षस प्रायः वानरों को तुच्छ भोजन या क्षुद्र जीव मानते थे, और यही अहंकार उनकी पराजय का कारण बन रहा था।
