ततः स रक्षोधिपतिर्महात्मा हनूमता ऽक्षे निहते कुमारे ।
मनः समाधाय तदेन्द्रकल्पं समादिदेशेन्द्रजितं सरोषम् ॥ ॥५-४८-१॥
Tataḥ sa rakṣodhipatirmahātmā hanūmatā 'kṣe nihate kumāre । Manaḥ samādhāya tadendrakalpaṃ samādideśendrajitaṃ saroṣam । ॥5-48-1॥
Translation
Then, upon the killing of Prince Aksha by Hanuman, that great-minded Lord of Rakshasas, composing his mind, angrily commanded Indrajit, who was equal to Indra.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब हनुमान द्वारा कुमार अक्ष के मारे जाने पर, उस महात्मा (महामनस्वी) राक्षसराज रावण ने अपने मन को एकाग्र (संयत) करके, क्रोधयुक्त होकर इंद्रतुल्य पराक्रमी इंद्रजित को आदेश दिया।
English Commentary
This opening verse of the new Sarga highlights Ravana's leadership qualities. The term 'Mahātmā' here refers to his greatness of mind in terms of fortitude and self-control, not saintliness. Despite the loss of his son, he suppresses his grief ('manaḥ samādhāya') to deal with the immediate threat. Summoning Indrajit, his most powerful warrior, indicates that Ravana now recognizes the severity of the crisis. It sets the stage for the final duel in the Sundarakanda.

यहाँ रावण के लिए 'महात्मा' शब्द का प्रयोग उसके नैतिक चरित्र के लिए नहीं, बल्कि उसकी 'महान धीरज' और मानसिक क्षमता (Great capacity/firmness) के लिए हुआ है। पुत्र-शोक में विलाप करने के बजाय, उसने तुरंत 'मनः समाधाय' (मन को स्थिर किया) और अगले कदम पर ध्यान दिया। यह एक राजा और सेनापति का गुण है। इंद्रजित को बुलाना यह बताता है कि रावण समझ गया है कि हनुमान कोई साधारण शत्रु नहीं हैं।
