बलावमर्दस्त्वयि सन्निकृष्टे यथा गते शाम्यति शान्तशत्रौ ।
तथा समीक्ष्यात्मबलं परं च समारभस्वास्त्रविदां वरिष्ठ ।

balāvamardastvayi sannikṛṣṭe yathā gate śāmyati śāntaśatrau |
tathā samīkṣyātmabalaṃ paraṃ ca samārabhasvāstravidāṃ variṣṭha ॥5-48-11॥
Translation
O Best among knowers of astras! Approaching the enemy, and assessing both your own strength and that of the opponent, act in such a way that the destruction of the army ceases, just as peace prevails when the enemy is quelled.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे अस्त्रवेत्ताों में श्रेष्ठ! तुम शत्रु के पास जाकर अपने और शत्रु के बल को परखकर ऐसा प्रयत्न करो जिससे सेना का विनाश रुक जाए, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे शत्रु के शांत हो जाने (मर जाने) पर सब शांत हो जाता है।
English Commentary
Ravana's priority is damage control. He instructs Indrajit to act in a way that the 'balavamarda' (destruction of the army) comes to an immediate halt. The goal is to neutralize the threat so that order is restored. Ravana envisions a scenario where Indrajit's arrival and subsequent action lead to the quieting of the chaos, similar to how peace returns after an enemy is vanquished ('shantashatrau'). The repetition of the advice to assess strength ('samikshya') underlines Ravana's anxiety about Hanuman's unpredictable power. He wants a decisive, surgical strike rather than a protracted brawl that costs more lives.

रावण का मुख्य उद्देश्य अब 'बलावमर्द' (सेना का विनाश) रोकना है। वह इंद्रजीत को निर्देश दे रहा है कि युद्ध को लंबा नहीं खींचना है। उसे जाकर स्थिति को नियंत्रित करना है। 'शाम्यति' (शांत हो जाए) शब्द का प्रयोग दो अर्थों में है—सेना का मरना बंद हो जाए, और हनुमान रूपी उपद्रव शांत हो जाए। रावण चाहता है कि इंद्रजीत अपनी उपस्थिति और कौशल से युद्ध का निर्णय शीघ्र करे ताकि और अधिक हानि न हो। वह पुनः 'समीक्ष्य' (परखकर) शब्द का प्रयोग करता है, जो सावधानी पर जोर देता है।
