अहो महत् कर्म कृतं निरर्थकं न राक्षसैर्मन्त्रगतिर्विमृष्टा ।
पुनश्च नास्त्रे विहते ऽस्त्रमन्यत् प्रवर्तते संशयिताः स्म सर्वे ।

aho mahat karma kṛtaṃ nirarthakaṃ na rākṣasairmantragatirvimṛṣṭā । punaśca nāstre vihate 'stramanyat pravartate saṃśayitāḥ sma sarve । । ॥5-48-51॥
Translation
(Indrajit thought) "Alas! The great deed I accomplished has been rendered useless. The Rakshasas did not understand the working of the mantra. Once the Astra is nullified, no other Astra can be deployed. We are all now placed in jeopardy."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(इंद्रजीत ने सोचा) "अहो! मेरा किया हुआ महान कार्य व्यर्थ हो गया। राक्षसों ने मंत्र की गति (सिद्धांत) को नहीं समझा। एक बार ब्रह्मास्त्र के विफल (निष्प्रभावी) हो जाने पर दूसरा अस्त्र काम नहीं करता। अब हम सब संकट में पड़ गए हैं।"
English Commentary
This verse expresses Indrajit's regret and helplessness. The "great deed" refers to the invocation of the Brahmastra, a rare and ultimate measure. Indrajit knows the immutable laws of these weapons: if the Brahmastra is rendered void once, it cannot be deployed again on the same target immediately. Due to the stupidity of the foot soldiers, not only was the bond broken, but Indrajit is also left without any remaining divine means to subdue Hanuman again. He acknowledges that this tactical blunder has placed the entire Rakshasa army in a state of "doubt" or existential danger.

इस श्लोक में इंद्रजीत का पश्चाताप और विवशता प्रकट होती है। 'महत् कर्म' से तात्पर्य ब्रह्मास्त्र के संधान से है, जो अत्यंत दुर्लभ और अंतिम उपाय था। इंद्रजीत जानता है कि ब्रह्मास्त्र का प्रयोग एक ही बार किया जा सकता है; यदि वह एक बार निष्फल हो जाए, तो उसी लक्ष्य पर दोबारा उसका प्रयोग संभव नहीं होता। राक्षसों की मूर्खता के कारण न केवल बंधन टूटा, बल्कि अब इंद्रजीत के पास हनुमान जी को दोबारा नियंत्रित करने का कोई दिव्य उपाय भी शेष नहीं रहा। यह स्थिति पूरी राक्षस सेना के लिए 'संशय' अर्थात जीवन-मरण का संकट बन गई है।
