Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अतीत्य मार्गं सहसा महात्मा स तत्र रक्षोधिपपादमूले ।
ददर्श राज्ञः परिचारवृद्धान् गृहं महारत्नविभूषितं च ।
॥५-४८-५८॥
atītya mārgaṃ sahasā mahātmā sa tatra rakṣodhipapādamūle । dadarśa rājñaḥ paricāravṛddhān gṛhaṃ mahāratnavibhūṣitaṃ ca । ॥5-48-58॥
Translation
Having quickly crossed the path, that great soul (Hanuman) saw the elderly attendants seated at the feet of the Demon King, and observed the palace decorated with precious gems.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मार्ग को शीघ्रता से पार करके, उस महात्मा (हनुमान) ने वहां राक्षसराज के चरणों के समीप बैठे हुए वृद्ध मंत्रियों को और उस महारत्नों से विभूषित भवन को देखा।
English Commentary
Hanuman is referred to as "Mahatma" (great soul) because he remains detached, observing everything as a witness rather than being intimidated by the enemy's grandeur. He observes the power structure—the "elderly attendants" at Ravana's feet indicate that Ravana ruled not just by brute force but with the counsel of experienced ministers. The immense wealth of Lanka is again highlighted by the mention of the gem-adorned palace.

हनुमान जी को 'महात्मा' कहा गया है क्योंकि वे शत्रु के वैभव से प्रभावित या भयभीत नहीं हैं, बल्कि एक साक्षी भाव से सब देख रहे हैं। उन्होंने रावण की सत्ता की संरचना को देखा—उसके चरणों में बैठे 'परिचारवृद्धान्' (वरिष्ठ मंत्री/सलाहकार), जो यह दर्शाता है कि रावण केवल बाहुबल से नहीं, बल्कि अनुभवी सचिवों की सहायता से राज्य चलाता था। लंका का ऐश्वर्य यहाँ पुन: रेखांकित किया गया है।
