राक्षसाधिपतिं चापि ददर्श कपिसत्तमः ।
तेजोबलसमायुक्तं तपन्तमिव भास्करम् ।
।
॥५-४८-६०॥
rākṣasādhipatiṃ cāpi dadarśa kapisattamaḥ । tejobalasamāyuktaṃ tapantamiva bhāskaram । । ॥5-48-60॥
Translation
And the best of monkeys also saw the King of Rakshasas, who was endowed with splendor and strength, shining like the blazing sun.
हिंदी अनुवाद
और उस वानरश्रेष्ठ (हनुमान) ने भी तेज़ और बल से युक्त, तपते हुए सूर्य के समान प्रकाशमान राक्षसराज (रावण) को देखा।
English Commentary
Even as an enemy, Hanuman does not ignore Ravana's attributes. He acknowledges Ravana's "tejas" (aura) and strength. Ravana is compared to the "blazing sun," indicating a personality that is fierce, overwhelming, and difficult to look at directly. Valmiki establishes Ravana's magnificence (albeit in evil) to emphasize that he is a formidable adversary, which ultimately magnifies the glory of Lord Rama's future victory over him.

हनुमान जी शत्रु होने के बावजूद रावण के गुणों की अनदेखी नहीं करते। वे रावण के 'तेज' (आभा) और 'बल' को स्वीकार करते हैं। रावण की तुलना 'तपते हुए सूर्य' से की गई है, जो उसके प्रचंड व्यक्तित्व और जिसे देखना कठिन हो, ऐसे प्रभाव को दर्शाती है। यह वाल्मीकि रावण की महानता (зло के रूप में ही सही) को स्थापित करते हैं ताकि राम की विजय और भी महत्वपूर्ण प्रतीत हो।
