ततः स कर्मणा तस्य विस्मितो भीमविक्रमः ।
हनुमान् रोषताम्राक्षो रक्षोधिपमवैक्षत ।

५.४९.१।। ॥५-४९-१॥
tataḥ sa karmaṇā tasya vismito bhīmavikramaḥ । hanumān roṣatāmrākṣo rakṣodhipamavaikṣata । । ॥5-49-1॥
Translation
Then, Hanuman of terrible prowess, astonished by his (Ravana's) majesty, and with eyes copper-red with anger, looked intently at the Lord of Rakshasas.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनंतर, भयानक पराक्रम वाले हनुमान जी, उसके (रावण के) कृत्य (वैभव/प्रभाव) से विस्मित होकर और रोष से लाल आँखों वाले होते हुए, राक्षसराज को ध्यानपूर्वक देखने लगे।
English Commentary
This canto begins with a description of Ravana's grandeur. Hanuman is 'vismita' (astonished)—despite being an enemy, Ravana's aura and the magnificence of his court are so overwhelming that even Hanuman is momentarily struck with wonder. His eyes are 'roshatamraksha' (copper-red with anger) because he is looking at the tyrant who tormented Mother Sita, yet he assesses Ravana's power with the objective gaze of a warrior. This captures the dichotomy of Ravana: he is detestable, yet awe-inspiring in his might.

यह सर्ग (अध्याय) रावण के ऐश्वर्य वर्णन से शुरू होता है। हनुमान जी 'विस्मित' हैं—शत्रु होने के बावजूद रावण का तेज और दरबार का प्रभाव इतना अधिक था कि एक पल के लिए हनुमान जी भी चकित रह गए। उनकी आँखें 'रोषताम्राक्षो' (क्रोध से लाल) हैं क्योंकि वे उस अत्याचारी को देख रहे हैं जिसने माता सीता को कष्ट दिया है, लेकिन साथ ही वे एक योद्धा की दृष्टि से रावण की शक्ति का आकलन भी कर रहे हैं। यह रावण के व्यक्तित्व का द्वंद्व है—वह घृणित है, फिर भी विस्मयकारी है।
