Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यद्यधर्मो न बलवान् स्यादयं राक्षसेश्वरः ।
स्यादय सुरलोकस्य सशक्रस्यापि रक्षिता ।
।
॥५-४९-१८॥
Yadyadharmo na balavān syādayaṃ rākṣaseśvaraḥ । Syādayaṃ suralokasya saśakrasyāpi rakṣitā । । ॥5-49-18॥
Translation
If unrighteousness (Adharma) were not dominant in him, this Lord of Rakshasas could have been the protector of the world of gods, even including Indra.

यदि इसमें अधर्म बलवान नहीं होता, तो यह राक्षसराज इन्द्र सहित सम्पूर्ण देवलोक का भी रक्षक बन सकता था।
English Commentary
This verse captures the tragic essence of Ravana. Hanuman concludes that Ravana lacks nothing in terms of capacity; his only failing is the dominance of 'Adharma' (unrighteousness). Had he been righteous, his power was such that he could have replaced Indra as the guardian of the heavens ('Rakṣitā'). This highlights a core theme of the Ramayana: capability (Shakti) without virtue (Dharma) is not only wasted but dangerous. Hanuman identifies the wasted potential of Ravana, acknowledging that he is a "great" man ruined by a lack of moral compass.

यह श्लोक रावण के चरित्र का सार है। हनुमान जी विश्लेषण करते हैं कि रावण में क्षमता की कोई कमी नहीं है; कमी केवल 'धर्म' की है। यदि रावण अधर्मी न होता, तो उसमें तीनों लोकों का रक्षक (दिग्पाल) बनने की योग्यता थी। यह टिप्पणी यह भी स्पष्ट करती है कि शक्ति और सौंदर्य बिना धर्म के निरर्थक हैं, बल्कि विनाशकारी हो जाते हैं। 'स्यात्' (हो सकता था) शब्द रावण की उस संभावना (potential) को दर्शाता है जिसे उसने अपने अहंकार और अधर्म के कारण नष्ट कर दिया। यह एक महान त्रासदी का चित्रण है।
