Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नीलाञ्जनचयप्रख्यं हारेणोरसि राजता ।
पूर्णचन्द्राभवक्रेण सबलाकमिवाम्बुदम् ।

५.४९.७।। ॥५-४९-७॥
nīlāñjanacayaprakhyaṃ hāreṇorasi rājatā । pūrṇacandrābhavakreṇa sabalakamivāmbudam । । ॥5-49-7॥
Translation
He resembled a heap of black collyrium. With the pearl necklace shining on his chest and his face(s) glowing like the full moon, he looked like a rain cloud adorned with a flock of white cranes.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह काले अंजन (काजल) के ढेर के समान (श्यामवर्ण) था। वक्षस्थल पर सुशोभित (श्वेत) हार और पूर्ण चंद्रमा के समान (चमकते) मुख के कारण वह ऐसा लग रहा था मानो बगुलों की पंक्ति से युक्त कोई मेघ (बादल) हो।
English Commentary
This is a classic simile in Sanskrit literature. Ravana's body is dark like a rain cloud, while his pearl necklace is white. The visual of white cranes (balaka) flying against dark clouds is strikingly beautiful. His face is likened to the full moon, a beacon of light atop the darkness of his body. This imagery captures the blend of 'tamas' (darkness/ignorance) and 'rajas' (passion/splendor) in Ravana's personality.

यह संस्कृत साहित्य की एक प्रसिद्ध उपमा है। रावण का शरीर काला (मेघ समान) है और मोतियों का हार सफेद है। काले बादलों के बीच उड़ते सफेद बगुलों (बलाक) का दृश्य अत्यंत मनोरम होता है। यहाँ रावण के मुख को भी 'पूर्णचंद्र' कहा गया है, जो अंधकार (शरीर) के ऊपर प्रकाश का पुंज है। यह दृश्य रावण के व्यक्तित्व में 'तमस' (अंधकार) और 'राजस' (प्रकाश/ऐश्वर्य) के मिश्रण को दर्शाता है।
