ततः स मध्यंगतमंशुमन्तं ।
ज्योत्स्नावितानम् महदुद्वमन्तम् ।
ददर्श धीमान् दिवि भानुमन्तम् ।
गोष्ठे वृषं मत्तमिव भ्रामन्तम् ॥५-५-१॥
tataḥ sa madhyagatam aṃśumantaṃ । jyotsnāvitānam mahad udvamantam । dadarśa dhīmān divi bhānumantam । goṣṭhe vṛṣaṃ mattam iva bhrāmantam ॥5-5-1॥
Translation
Thereafter, that intelligent one (Hanuman) saw the Luminous One (Moon) in the middle of the sky, spreading a vast canopy of moonlight, and appearing like a spirited bull wandering in a cowpen.

तत्पश्चात्, उस बुद्धिमान (हनुमान) ने आकाश के मध्य में स्थित, चांदनी का विशाल चंदोवा (वितान) फैलाने वाले, और गौशाला में घूमते हुए मस्त बैल के समान, उस किरण-माली (चंद्रमा) को देखा।
English Commentary
This fifth Sarga begins with a magnificent description of the moonrise (Chandrodaya). Interestingly, Vālmīki uses the term Bhānumantam (Possessor of Rays), typically reserved for the Sun, to describe the Moon here; however, the context of jyotsnā (moonlight) confirms the subject. Hanumān sees the moon in the zenith, spreading a vast canopy of light. The simile used is striking: the moon is compared to a matta vṛṣa (spirited bull) wandering in a goṣṭha (cowpen). Just as a bull dominates the pen with vitality, the moon dominates the night sky amidst the stars. This imagery conveys the unchecked movement and radiance of the moon as it illuminates Hanumān's path.
