Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
महागजैश्चापि तथा नदद्भिः ।
सुपूजितैश्चापि तथा सुसद्भिः ।
रराज वीरैश्च विनिःश्वसद्भि ।
र्ह्रदो भुजङ्गैरिव निःश्वसद्भिः ॥५-५-१४॥
mahāgajaiś cāpi tathā nadadbhiḥ । supūjitaiś cāpi tathā susadbhiḥ । rarāja vīraiś ca viniḥśvasadbhir । hṛdo bhujaṅgair iva niḥśvasadbhiḥ ॥5-5-14॥
Translation
Lanka shone forth (was adorned) with loud-roaring great elephants, with highly revered and splendid mansions, and with heroes who were sighing deeply, like a lake (Hrada) adorned with serpents that are hissing (or exhaling).
हिंदी अनुवाद
वहाँ (लंका) जोर से दहाड़ते हुए विशाल हाथियों, अत्यधिक पूजे जाने वाले तथा उत्तम सदनों (भवनों), और दीर्घ श्वास लेते हुए वीरों से ऐसे सुशोभित हो रहा था, जैसे लंबी साँसें लेते हुए साँपों से ह्रद (तालाब) सुशोभित होता है।
English Commentary
This verse simultaneously presents the regal splendour and the underlying danger of Lanka. The city was adorned with roaring great elephants and splendid, highly revered mansions. It was also filled with heroes sighing deeply (viniḥśvasadbhiḥ), perhaps in sleep or due to exhaustion. All three elements are compared to a lake (Hrada) filled with hissing serpents. This powerful simile suggests that despite the outer beauty and opulence, Lanka is fundamentally a dangerous and venomous place. The heroes, elephants, and mansions—all symbols of Ravana's might—serve as warnings to Hanumān.

यह श्लोक लंका की राजसी भव्यता और छिपे हुए खतरे को एक साथ प्रस्तुत करता है। लंका न केवल विशाल हाथियों (mahāgajaiḥ) और उत्तम, पूजे जाने वाले भवनों (susadbhiḥ) से सुसज्जित थी, बल्कि वीरों (vīraiḥ) से भी भरी थी जो संभवतः नींद या थकान में गहरी साँसें ले रहे थे। इन तीनों को एक सर्पों से भरे हुए ह्रद (तालाब) की उपमा दी गई है, जहाँ साँपों की फुफकार (niḥśvasadbhiḥ) तालाब की शांति को भंग करती है। यह उपमा दर्शाती है कि लंका की बाहरी सुंदरता के बावजूद, यह अंततः एक खतरनाक और जहरीला स्थान है। वीर, हाथी और भवन सभी रावण की शक्ति के प्रतीक थे, जो हनुमान को सावधान कर रहे थे।
