उष्णार्दिताम् सानुसृतास्रकण्ठीम् ।
पुरा वरार्होत्तमनिष्ककण्ठीम् ।
सुजातपक्ष्मामभिरक्तकण्ठीम् ।
वनेऽप्रनृत्तामिव नीलकण्ठीम् ॥५-५-२५॥
uṣṇārditām sānusṛtāsrakaṇṭhīm |
purā varārhottamaniṣkakaṇṭhīm |
sujātapakṣmāmabhiraktakaṇṭhīm |
vane'pranṛttāmiva nīlakaṇṭhīm ॥5-5-25॥
Translation
She was tormented by the heat of grief, her throat choked with flowing tears. She, who formerly wore necklaces of excellent gold coins, possessed beautiful eyelashes and a sweet voice, but now appeared like a peahen in the forest that has ceased to dance.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह (सीता) विरह की उष्णता (संताप) से पीड़ित थीं, उनका कंठ आंसुओं से रुंधा हुआ था। पूर्व में जो उत्तम स्वर्ण मुद्राओं (निष्क) के हार से सुशोभित रहती थीं, सुंदर पलकों वाली वह सीता अब वन में नृत्य न करने वाली मयूरी (नीलकण्ठी) के समान थीं।
English Commentary
Valmiki employs poignant contrast and imagery here. Sita, who was once adorned with royal golden ornaments ('nishka'), is now adorned only by her tears. The metaphor of the 'apranṛttām nīlakaṇṭhīm' (a peahen that does not dance) is powerful. A peacock usually dances in joy; describing Sita as a peahen that has stopped dancing vividly conveys her loss of joy and vitality in captivity. Her throat, once meant for sweet speech or singing, is now choked with tears. This verse emphasizes the transformation of a queen accustomed to luxury into a sorrowful ascetic, maintaining her dignity ('beautiful eyelashes') even in suffering.

यहाँ सीता की वर्तमान दयनीय अवस्था और उनके अतीत के वैभव के बीच मार्मिक तुलना की गई है। 'उष्णार्दिताम्' उनके मानसिक संताप और विरह की अग्नि को दर्शाता है। वाल्मीकि जी ने एक अत्यंत सुंदर उपमा दी है—'वने अप्रनृत्तामिव नीलकण्ठीम्'। जैसे वर्षा के अभाव में या शोक में मयूरी (मोरनी) नृत्य त्याग देती है, वैसे ही सीता, जो स्वभाव से आनंदित रहने वाली थीं, अब राक्षसों के बीच मुरझा गयी हैं। उनके गले में अब स्वर्ण आभूषण ('निष्क') नहीं, बल्कि आंसुओं का वेग है। यह श्लोक सीता के नैसर्गिक सौंदर्य ('सुजातपक्ष्माम' - सुंदर पलकें) और उनकी वर्तमान पीड़ा का करुण चित्रण है।
