अव्यक्तरेखामिव चन्द्ररेखां ।
पाम्सुप्रदिग्धामिव हेमरेखाम् ।
क्षतप्ररूढामिव बाणरेखां ।
वायुप्रभिन्नामिव मेघरेक्षाम् ॥५-५-२६॥
avyaktarekhāmiva candrarekhāṃ |
pāmsuprapradigdhāmiva hemarekhām |
kṣataprarūḍhāmiva bāṇarekhāṃ |
vāyuprabhinnāmiva megharekhām ॥5-5-26॥
Translation
She appeared like a crescent moon with a dim outline, like a streak of gold smeared with dust, like the scar of an arrow wound that has healed, and like a line of clouds scattered by the wind.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह (सीता) धुंधली रेखा वाली चंद्रकला के समान, धूल से सनी हुई स्वर्ण रेखा के समान, घाव भरने के बाद बचे हुए बाण के निशान (घाव) के समान और वायु द्वारा छिन्न-भिन्न की गई बादलों की रेखा के समान प्रतीत होती थीं।
English Commentary
This verse uses a series of similes to describe Sita’s obscured glory. Comparing her to a 'dim crescent moon' suggests that her beauty is present but veiled by sorrow. The simile of the 'gold streak smeared with dust' is philosophically significant: just as dust covers gold but does not reduce its value, Sita’s ragged appearance does not diminish her inherent purity and worth. The comparison to a 'healed arrow wound' (scar) evokes a sense of lingering pain and trauma. Finally, the 'scattered cloud line' reflects her instability and isolation. These images collectively paint a portrait of fragile beauty enduring amidst harsh conditions.
