Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
हम्सो यथा राजतपञ्जरसथः ।
सिम्हो यथा मन्दरकन्दरस्थः ।
वीरो यथा गर्वितकुञ्जरस्थ ।
श्चन्द्रो विबभ्राज तथामभरस्थः ॥५-५-४॥
haṃso yathā rājata pañjarasthaḥ । siṃho yathā mandara kandarasthaḥ । vīro yathā garvita kuñjarasthaḥ । ścandro vibabhrāja tathā ambarasthaḥ ॥5-5-4॥
Translation
Just as a swan shines in a silver cage, just as a lion (shines) in the caves of Mandara, and just as a hero (shines) on a proud elephant, so did the Moon shine in the sky.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे चांदी के पिंजरे में हंस सुशोभित होता है, जैसे मंदराचल की कंदरा (गुफा) में सिंह, और जैसे गर्वित हाथी पर वीर सुशोभित होता है, वैसे ही आकाश में (स्थित) चंद्रमा सुशोभित हो रहा था।
English Commentary
Three distinct similes are used here to describe the Moon's presence. 1) Swan in a silver cage: Represents the whiteness and grace of the Moon against the vast sky. 2) Lion in a cave: Represents the Moon's power and dominance over the night, just as a lion dominates its den. 3) Hero on an elephant: Represents the regal majesty of the Moon. Combined, these images portray the Moon as graceful, powerful, and royal. As the Moon stood in the sky (ambarasthaḥ), it embodied the qualities of all three: the purity of the swan, the might of the lion, and the glory of the hero.

यहाँ चंद्रमा की स्थिति और प्रभाव को समझाने के लिए तीन अलग-अलग उपमाएँ दी गई हैं। 1) चांदी के पिंजरे में हंस: आकाश (चांदी का पिंजरा) में चंद्रमा (हंस) अपनी सफेदी और सौम्यता के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। 2) कंदरा में सिंह: यह चंद्रमा के तेज और प्रभुत्व को दर्शाता है, जैसे सिंह अपनी गुफा का स्वामी होता है। 3) हाथी पर वीर: यह चंद्रमा की राजसी शान (Royalty) को दर्शाता है। ये तीनों उपमाएँ मिलकर चंद्रमा के सौम्य, तेजस्वी और राजसी स्वरूप का पूर्ण चित्रण करती हैं। 'अम्बरस्थः' (आकाश में स्थित) चंद्रमा इन तीनों के गुणों को धारण किए हुए था।
