Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
विनष्टशीताम्बुतुषारपङ्को ।
महाग्रहग्राहविनष्टपङ्कः ।
प्रकाशलक्ष्म्याश्रयनिर्मलाङ्को ।
रराज चन्द्रो भगवान् शशाङ्कः ॥५-५-६॥
vinaṣṭa śītāmbu tuṣāra paṅko । mahāgraha grāha vinaṣṭa paṅkaḥ । prakāśa lakṣmyāśraya nirmalāṅko । rarāja candro bhagavān śaśāṅkaḥ ॥5-5-6॥
Translation
Lord Śaśāṅka (The Moon with the hare-mark) shone forth; he was free from the mire of cold water and mist, free from the eclipse (grasp) of the Great Planet (Rahu), and was the abode of the splendour of light with a spotless mark.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जिससे शीत जल और पाले (तुषार) का कीचड़ (धुंध) नष्ट हो गया है, जो महाग्रह (राहु) की पकड़ से मुक्त है, और जो प्रकाशमयी लक्ष्मी का आश्रय तथा निर्मल कलंक वाला है, वह भगवान शशांक (चंद्रमा) सुशोभित हो रहा था।
English Commentary
The verse emphasizes the clarity and purity of the Moon. The sky is clear, free from the "mire" of mist or frost (tuṣāra paṅko). There is no eclipse; he is free from the grasp of the "Great Planet" Rahu (mahāgraha). The Moon is referred to as Śaśāṅka (having the mark of a hare). The poet notes that while the moon has a mark (spot), it appears as a nirmalāṅka (spotless mark) because it is the abode of the splendour of light (prakāśa lakṣmyā). Even its blemish contributes to its beauty rather than diminishing it. The title Bhagavān (Lord) acknowledges the Moon's divinity.

यहाँ चंद्रमा की निर्मलता पर जोर दिया गया है। आकाश साफ़ है—न कोहरा है, न धुंध (tuṣāra paṅko—बर्फ/ओस का कीचड़)। 'महाग्रह' अर्थात राहु का भी कोई ग्रहण नहीं है, जिससे चंद्रमा बाधा-रहित चमक रहा है। चंद्रमा को 'शशांक' (खरगोश के चिन्ह वाला) कहा गया है। कवि कहते हैं कि यद्यपि चंद्रमा में कलंक (धब्बा) है, परन्तु इस समय वह 'निर्मलाङ्क' (निर्मल चिन्ह वाला) लग रहा है, क्योंकि वह प्रकाश की लक्ष्मी (शोभा) का आश्रय बना हुआ है। उसका कलंक भी उसकी सुंदरता को बढ़ा रहा है, उसे कम नहीं कर रहा है। 'भगवान' शब्द चंद्रमा के दैवीय स्वरूप को इंगित करता है।
