Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शीलातलम् प्राप्य यथा मृगेन्द्रो ।
महारणम् प्राप्य यथा गजेन्द्रह् ।
राज्यम् समासाद्य यथा नरेन्द्र ।
स्तथाप्रकाशो विरराज चन्द्रः ॥५-५-७॥
śīlātalam prāpya yathā mṛgendro । mahāraṇam prāpya yathā gajendraḥ । rājyam samāsādya yathā narendra । stathā prakāśo virarāja candraḥ ॥5-5-7॥
Translation
Just as the Lion (Lord of Beasts) shines upon reaching a rocky plateau, just as the Elephant King shines upon entering a great battle (or forest), and just as a King shines upon obtaining a kingdom, so did the luminous Moon shine.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे शिलातल (पहाड़ी) पर पहुंचकर मृगराज (सिंह), जैसे महायुद्ध (या विशाल वन) को पाकर गजराज, और जैसे राज्य को पाकर राजा (नरेंद्र) सुशोभित होता है, वैसे ही (आकाश को पाकर) वह प्रकाशमान चंद्रमा सुशोभित हो रहा था।
English Commentary
This verse illustrates the importance of proper placement. A glorious entity shines brightest in its rightful element. A lion looks majestic not in a cage, but on a rocky plateau. An elephant looks best not when bound, but in a great battle (mahāraṇam). A king shines not in exile, but when ruling his kingdom. Similarly, the Moon, having risen from the horizon to claim the sky, was shining with its full potential. This suggests that the Moon had taken command of the night, much like a king commands his realm.
हिंदी टीका
यह श्लोक 'स्थान-महत्त्व' (importance of place/position) को दर्शाता है। कोई भी तेजस्वी वस्तु अपने उचित स्थान पर ही सर्वाधिक शोभित होती है। सिंह पिंजरे में नहीं, शिलातल (चट्टान) पर राजा लगता है। हाथी बंधा हुआ नहीं, महारण (युद्ध/वन) में शोभा पाता है। राजा वन में नहीं, सिंहासन (राज्य) पर शोभित होता है। उसी प्रकार, चंद्रमा भी क्षितिज से ऊपर उठकर जब आकाश के मध्य में (अपने साम्राज्य में) स्थापित हो गया, तब उसकी असली शोभा प्रकट हुई। यह तुलना हनुमान जी को प्रेरित करती है कि वे भी अपने उचित स्थान (लघिमा/शक्ति) का प्रयोग कर सफल होंगे।
