वनं राक्षसराजस्य दर्शनार्थे विनाशितम् ।
ततस्ते राक्षसाः प्राप्ता बलिनो युद्धकाङ्क्षिणः ।
॥५-५०-१५॥
Vanaṃ rākṣasarājasya darśanārthe vināśitam । Tataste rākasāḥ prāptā balino yuddhakāṅkṣiṇaḥ । ॥5-50-15॥
Translation
"The grove was destroyed solely for the sake of seeing the King of Rakshasas. Then those mighty Rakshasas arrived there, seeking battle."

"राक्षसराज के दर्शन के लिए ही मैंने वन को नष्ट किया। (मेरे ऐसा करने पर) वे बलवान राक्षस युद्ध की इच्छा से वहां आ पहुँचे।"
English Commentary
Hanuman completes his justification. He reiterates that the vandalism ('Vanaṃ vināśitam') was a tactic to gain attention ('Darśanārthe'). He subtly shifts the blame for the lethal combat onto the guards, stating they arrived 'seeking battle' ('Yuddhakāṅkṣiṇaḥ'). The implication is that he acted in self-defense against aggressors. By framing the narrative this way, he presents himself as a messenger who was forced into combat, rather than an invader who came to kill. This sets the stage for him to finally deliver his message from Rama.

हनुमान जी स्पष्टीकरण देते हैं कि उन्होंने पहल करके युद्ध नहीं किया। उनका उद्देश्य केवल 'दर्शन' (मुलाकात) था, जिसके लिए उन्होंने वन उजाड़ा। जब रक्षक (राक्षस) मारने के लिए आए ('युद्धकाङ्क्षिणा'), तो आत्मरक्षा में उन्हें युद्ध करना पड़ा। यह एक चतुर कूटनीतिक उत्तर है। वे सारा दोष परिस्थिति पर डाल देते हैं—"मैं तो मिलना चाहता था, इन्होंने मुझ पर हमला किया, तो मैंने उन्हें मारा।" यह रावण के इस प्रश्न का उत्तर है कि "युद्ध क्यों किया?"
