रक्षणार्थं तु देहस्य प्रतियुद्धा मया रणे ।
अस्त्रपाशैर्न शक्यो ऽहं बद्धुं देवासुरैरपि ।

Rakṣaṇārthaṃ tu dehasya pratiyuddhā mayā raṇe । Astrapāśairna śakyo 'haṃ baddhuṃ devāsurairapi । । ॥5-50-16॥
Translation
"I fought back in the battle only for the protection of my body (self-defense). Otherwise, I cannot be bound by weapon-bonds (like Brahmastra) even by gods and demons combined."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"मैंने युद्धभूमि में केवल अपनी देह-रक्षा (आत्मरक्षा) के लिए प्रतियुद्ध (जवाबी हमला) किया। (अन्यथा) देवता और असुर मिलकर भी मुझे अस्त्र-पाशों (ब्रह्मास्त्र आदि) से बांधने में समर्थ नहीं हैं।"
English Commentary
Hanuman clarifies his position: he is not a captive by defeat, but by choice. He asserts that no power, divine or demonic ('Devasurairapi'), can truly bind him with missiles due to his boons. By stating he fought only for 'Rakṣaṇārthaṃ' (protection of the body), he justifies the violence as self-defense, absolving himself of the crime of unprovoked aggression. This statement is a strategic display of power, warning Ravana that the monkey standing before him is unbound and dangerous, having submitted only out of respect for the divine weapon.

यहाँ हनुमान जी अपनी अजेयता का उद्घोष करते हैं। वे स्पष्ट करते हैं कि मेघनाद द्वारा छोड़े गए ब्रह्मास्त्र से वे बंधे नहीं थे, बल्कि उन्होंने स्वयं समर्पण किया था। 'प्रतियुद्धा' शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है—यह दर्शाता है कि हनुमान जी आक्रामक (aggressor) नहीं थे, बल्कि उन्होंने केवल आत्मरक्षा में शस्त्र उठाया। यह कथन रावण के मन में भय और सम्मान दोनों उत्पन्न करने के लिए है। वे यह संदेश दे रहे हैं कि वे यहाँ पराजित होकर नहीं, बल्कि स्वेच्छा से आए हैं।
