Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शङ्काहतात्मा दध्यौ स कपीन्द्रं तेजसावृतम् ।
किमेष भगवान् नन्दी भवेत् साक्षादिहागतः ।
।
॥५-५०-२॥
Śaṅkāhatātmā dadhyau sa kapīndraṃ tejasāvṛtam । Kimeṣa bhagavān nandī bhavet sākṣādihāgataḥ । । ॥5-50-2॥
Translation
With his mind struck by suspicion, he contemplated the monkey chief enveloped in splendor: "Could this be Lord Nandi himself who has come here in person?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
शंका से ग्रस्त मन वाले उस (रावण) ने तेज से घिरे हुए उस वानरराज के विषय में सोचा— "क्या यह साक्षात भगवान नन्दीश्वर ही यहाँ आ गए हैं?"
English Commentary
Ravana's anger mixes with 'Śaṅkā' (suspicion/doubt). He observes the radiant aura ('Tejasāvṛtam') of Hanuman and recalls a past incident. Long ago at Kailasa, Ravana had mocked Nandi, Lord Shiva's attendant, for his monkey-like face. Nandi had then cursed Ravana, predicting that beings possessing such a form would destroy his race. Seeing Hanuman's extraordinary power and demeanor, Ravana fears that Nandi himself has arrived to fulfill that curse. This reveals Ravana's inner insecurity despite his outward arrogance.
हिंदी टीका
रावण हनुमान जी के तेज को देखकर संशय में पड़ गया। उसे अपने अतीत का एक श्राप याद आया। एक बार रावण ने कैलाश पर्वत पर भगवान शिव के वाहन नन्दी के वानर-सदृश मुख को देखकर उपहास किया था। तब नन्दी ने श्राप दिया था कि "मेरे जैसे मुख वाले वानर ही तेरे कुल का नाश करेंगे।" आज हनुमान जी को देखकर रावण को लगा कि कहीं वह श्राप फलित तो नहीं हो रहा और स्वयं नन्दी ही वानर रूप में आ गए हैं। 'तेजसावृतम्' बताता है कि हनुमान जी का ओज सामान्य वानर जैसा नहीं था।
