Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दुरात्मा पृच्छ्यतामेष कुतः किं वा ऽस्य कारणम् ।
वनभङ्गे च को ऽस्यार्थो राक्षसीनां च तर्जने ।
।
॥५-५०-५॥
Durātmā pṛcchyatāmeṣa kutaḥ kiṃ vā 'sya kāraṇam । Vanabhaṅge ca ko 'syārtho rākṣasīnāṃ ca tarjane । । ॥5-50-5॥
Translation
"Ask this evil-minded one where he comes from? What is the reason for his arrival? What is his purpose in destroying the grove and frightening the demonesses?"

"इस दुरात्मा से पूछा जाए कि यह कहाँ से आया है? इसके यहाँ आने का क्या कारण है? वन (अशोक वाटिका) को उजाड़ने और राक्षसियों को डराने में इसका क्या प्रयोजन है?"
English Commentary
Ravana refers to Hanuman as 'Durātmā' (evil-souled) because of the destruction caused in the royal gardens. His instructions to Prahasta are precise and investigative. He seeks to know Hanuman's origin, the motive behind his intrusion, and specifically, the rationale behind the aggression—destroying the grove and terrorizing the guards. Ravana senses that these actions (vandalism and assault) go beyond mere trespassing; they are deliberate provocations. He wants to understand the strategic intent behind these seemingly chaotic acts before deciding the prisoner's fate.

रावण हनुमान जी को 'दुरात्मा' संबोधित करता है क्योंकि उन्होंने उसकी प्रिय अशोक वाटिका को नष्ट कर दिया था। रावण के प्रश्न बहुत स्पष्ट हैं—वह हनुमान का मूल स्थान (कुतः), आने का कारण (किं कारणम्), और विध्वंस का उद्देश्य (को ऽस्यार्थो) जानना चाहता है। रावण को विशेष रूप से यह बात खटक रही है कि एक दूत या यात्री वन को क्यों उजाड़ेगा और स्त्रियों (रक्षकों) को क्यों डराएगा। यह रावण की दृष्टि में एक साधारण शत्रु का व्यवहार नहीं था, इसलिए वह इसके पीछे का 'अर्थ' (प्रयोजन) जानना चाहता है।
