मत्पुरीमप्रधृष्यां वा ऽ ऽगमने किं प्रयोजनम् ।
आयोधने वा किं कार्यं त्वया कपे ।

Matpurīmapradhṛṣyāṃ vā ''gamane kiṃ prayojanam । Āyodhane vā kiṃ kāryaṃ tvayā kape । । ॥5-50-6॥
Translation
"(Ask him) What is the purpose of coming to my invincible city? And, O Monkey, what business did you have in fighting?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"(इससे पूछो) मेरी इस अजेय नगरी में आने का क्या प्रयोजन है? और हे वानर! (रक्षकों के साथ) युद्ध करने का तुम्हारा क्या उद्देश्य है?"
English Commentary
Ravana takes great pride in the impregnability of Lanka, calling it 'Apradhṛṣyāṃ' (unassailable/invincible). He is baffled that a lone entity breached its defenses. The core of his inquiry is the motive behind the violence ('Āyodhane'). By diplomatic standards, messengers do not engage in combat. Ravana wants to establish whether Hanuman is a rogue agent or part of a larger invading force. He instructs Prahasta to demand a justification for why a visitor would turn into a combatant within the king's own territory.

रावण को अपनी नगरी लंका की सुरक्षा पर बहुत गर्व था, इसलिए वह उसे 'अप्रधृष्याम्' (जिस पर हमला न किया जा सके/अजेय) कहता है। उसे आश्चर्य है कि एक अकेले वानर ने अभेद्य सुरक्षा को भेदकर प्रवेश कैसे किया। रावण यह भी जानना चाहता है कि यदि हनुमान केवल दूत थे, तो उन्होंने 'आयोधन' (युद्ध) क्यों किया? कूटनीतिक नियमों के अनुसार दूत युद्ध नहीं करते। रावण यह पता लगाने की कोशिश कर रहा है कि क्या यह युद्ध की घोषणा है या केवल कोई शक्ति प्रदर्शन।
