Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यदि तावत्त्वमिन्द्रेण प्रेषितो रावणालयम् ।
तत्त्वमाख्याहि मा भूत्ते भयं वानर मोक्ष्यसे ।
।
॥५-५०-८॥
Yadi tāvattvamindreṇa preṣito rāvaṇālayam । Tattvamākhyāhi mā bhūtte bhayaṃ vānara mokṣyase । । ॥5-50-8॥
Translation
"If you have been sent by Indra to Ravana's abode, speak the truth. Do not fear; O Monkey, you shall be released."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"यदि तुम इन्द्र के द्वारा रावण के भवन (लंका) में भेजे गए हो, तो सत्य बता दो। डरो मत, (सत्य बताने पर) हे वानर, तुम मुक्त कर दिए जाओगे।"
English Commentary
The primary suspicion of the Rakshasas falls on their arch-enemy, Indra. Prahasta hypothesizes that Hanuman is a divine spy sent to infiltrate Ravana's abode ('Rāvaṇālayam'). He uses the tactic of plea bargaining, promising liberty ('Mokṣyase') in exchange for the truth. The underlying assumption is that a monkey could not possess such might naturally; he must be a proxy for the Devas. Prahasta tries to frame the situation such that Hanuman feels safe betraying his alleged master, Indra, to save his own life.

राक्षसों को सबसे अधिक खटका देवराज इन्द्र से रहता था। प्रहस्त का पहला अनुमान यही है कि हनुमान इन्द्र के गुप्तचर हैं। वह 'मोक्ष्यसे' (छोड़ दिए जाओगे) का प्रलोभन देता है। यह राजनीति का 'दान' और 'भेद' पक्ष है। वे यह मानकर चल रहे हैं कि एक साधारण वानर में इतना बल नहीं हो सकता, अवश्य ही उसे देवताओं ने भेजा होगा। प्रहस्त हनुमान जी को यह विश्वास दिलाना चाहता है कि यदि वे केवल सन्देशवाहक हैं, तो उन्हें दंड नहीं दिया जाएगा, बस वे अपने स्वामी का नाम बता दें।
