तपस्सन्तापलब्धस्ते यो ऽयं धर्मपरिग्रहः ।
न स नाशयितुं न्याय्यमात्मप्राणपरिग्रहः ।

tapassantāpalabdhaste yo 'yaṃ dharmaparigrahaḥ । na sa nāśayituṃ nyāyyamātmaprāṇaparigrahaḥ । । 5.51.25।। ॥5-51-25॥
Translation
It is not right to destroy the accumulation of merit (Dharma) that you obtained through the rigorous heat of penance, which acts as the preserver of your own life/breath.

तपस्या के कष्ट को सहकर आपने जो यह धर्म (पुण्य/शक्ति) का संग्रह किया है, और जो आपके प्राणों की रक्षा करता है, उसे नष्ट करना उचित नहीं है।
English Commentary
Hanuman argues from the economics of spirituality. Ravana earned his status through tapas (austerity), creating a reserve of merit (dharmaparigrahaḥ). Hanuman warns that this reserve is the only thing sustaining his life (ātmaprāṇaparigrahaḥ). By engaging in this heinous act, Ravana is rapidly depleting that account. Hanuman advises that it is not nyāyyam (logical/just) to squander such hard-earned spiritual capital. It forces Ravana to calculate the cost: Is holding this one woman worth burning through the merit of thousands of years of penance?

हनुमान रावण के अतीत के प्रयासों का सम्मान करते हुए उसे वर्तमान की मूर्खता दिखा रहे हैं। रावण ने घोर तपस्या से जो शक्ति और वरदान पाए थे, हनुमान उसे 'धर्मपरिग्रह' (पुण्य की पूंजी) कहते हैं। वे चेतावनी दे रहे हैं कि सीता को कैद रखना उस पूंजी को आग लगाने जैसा है। 'आत्मप्राणपरिग्रहः' (अपने प्राणों को धारण करने वाला) विशेषण यह बताता है कि रावण का जीवन उसकी तपस्या के बल पर ही टिका है। यदि अधर्म के कारण वह तप-बल क्षीण हो गया, तो रावण की मृत्यु निश्चित है। यह एक आध्यात्मिक चेतावनी है: अपनी ही मेहनत (तपस्या) को अपने ही हाथों (अधर्म से) बर्बाद मत करो।
