Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
विभीषणवचः श्रुत्वा रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः ।
रोषेण महताविष्टो वाक्यमुत्तरमब्रवीत् ।

vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ śrutvā rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ |
roṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭo vākyamuttaramabravīt ॥5-52-10॥
Translation
Hearing Vibhishana's words, Ravana, the Lord of Rakshasas, possessed by great anger, spoke the following reply.

विभीषण के वचन सुनकर, राक्षसेश्वर रावण ने महान क्रोध से युक्त होकर (पुनः) यह उत्तर दिया।
English Commentary
Despite Vibhishana’s eloquent and reasoned appeal, Ravana remains in the grip of fury ('roṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭo'). This verse serves as a narrative bridge. It indicates that while Ravana heard the advice, his emotional state prevented immediate acceptance. The phrase 'rākṣaseśvaraḥ' (Lord of Rakshasas) reinforces his authority, but his reaction shows the fragility of that authority when driven by passion rather than policy. He prepares to retort, indicating that while he might adjust the punishment, his animosity remains undiminished.

विभीषण के इतने नीतिपूर्ण और हितकारी वचन सुनने के बाद भी रावण का क्रोध शांत नहीं हुआ। वह 'महता रोषेण आविष्टः'—अत्यंत क्रोध के आवेश में था। यह श्लोक संवाद को आगे बढ़ाता है। यद्यपि रावण ने विभीषण की बात सुनी, परन्तु उसका अहंकार उसे अपनी गलती स्वीकार करने से रोक रहा था। यह दर्शाता है कि विनाशकाले विपरीत बुद्धि—जब विनाश निकट होता है, तो अच्छी सलाह भी बुरी लगती है या क्रोध को और भड़का देती है। रावण अब विभीषण के तर्कों का उत्तर अपने कुतर्कों से देगा।
