न पापानां वधे पापं विद्यते शत्रुसूदन ।
तस्मादेनं वधिष्यामि वानरं पापचारिणम् ।

na pāpānāṃ vadhe pāpaṃ vidyate śatrusūdana |
tasmādenaṃ vadhiṣyāmi vānaraṃ pāpacāriṇam ॥5-52-11॥
Translation
"O destroyer of enemies (Vibhishana)! There is no sin involved in killing sinners. Therefore, I shall certainly kill this monkey who performs sinful deeds."

"हे शत्रुसूदन (विभीषण)! पापियों का वध करने में कोई पाप नहीं होता। इसलिए मैं इस पापचारी वानर का वध अवश्य करूँगा।"
English Commentary
Ravana counters Vibhishana’s ethical appeal with a twisted interpretation of Dharma. He argues that the immunity granted to envoys is nullified if the envoy is a 'pāpā' (sinner/criminal). By labeling Hanuman a 'pāpacārin' (one acting sinfully) due to the destruction of the Ashok Vatika, Ravana attempts to legitimize his desire for execution. This reflects the mindset of a tyrant who manipulates laws to suit his impulses. Addressing Vibhishana as 'Śatrusūdana' (slayer of enemies) serves a dual purpose: it acknowledges Vibhishana's martial prowess while subtly pressuring him to align with the destruction of the enemy sitting before them.

रावण यहाँ कुतर्क का सहारा ले रहा है। विभीषण ने धर्म की दुहाई दी थी, तो रावण अपने अधर्म को धर्म सिद्ध करने का प्रयास कर रहा है। उसका तर्क है कि यद्यपि दूत अवध्य है, किन्तु यदि दूत 'पापी' हो, तो उसे मारने में दोष नहीं लगता। रावण हनुमानजी को 'पापचारी' मानता है क्योंकि उन्होंने अशोक वाटिका उजाड़ी और राक्षसों का वध किया। विभीषण को 'शत्रुसूदन' कहकर संबोधित करना यहाँ व्यंग्यात्मक भी हो सकता है और स्नेहपूर्ण भी, यह जताने के लिए कि हम शत्रुओं का नाश करते हैं, उन्हें छोड़ते नहीं। यह श्लोक रावण की तामसिक बुद्धि को दर्शाता है जो अपने क्रोध की तुष्टि के लिए नियमों को अपने अनुसार तोड़ती-मरोड़ती है।
