न चाप्यस्य कपेर्घाते कञ्चित् पश्याम्यहं गुणम् ।
तेष्वयं पात्यतां दण्डो यैरयं प्रेषितः कपिः ।

na cāpyasya kaperghāte kañcit paśyāmyahaṃ guṇam |
teṣvayaṃ pātyatāṃ daṇḍo yairayaṃ preṣitaḥ kapiḥ ॥5-52-18॥
Translation
"I do not see any merit/benefit in killing this monkey. Let this punishment fall upon those by whom this monkey was sent."

"और इस वानर को मारने में मुझे कोई गुण (लाभ) भी दिखाई नहीं देता। यह दंड (मृत्युदंड) तो उन पर गिराया जाना चाहिए जिन्होंने इस वानर को भेजा है।"
English Commentary
Shifting from ethics to pragmatism, Vibhishana argues that executing Hanuman yields no 'guṇam' (merit or strategic advantage). Hanuman is merely an arrow; the punishment should be directed at the archer. By stating "Let the punishment fall on those who sent him," Vibhishana redirects Ravana's vindictiveness towards Rama and Sugriva. This serves a dual purpose: it saves Hanuman’s life and reframes the conflict as a war between kings, rather than the execution of a subordinate, which would be petty and strategically useless.

अब विभीषण व्यावहारिक (Pragmatic) तर्क पर आते हैं। वे कहते हैं, "इस बंदर को मारने से क्या मिलेगा?" ('न पश्यामि गुणम्')। हनुमान तो मात्र एक साधन (instrument) हैं। असली अपराधी वे हैं जिन्होंने इसे भेजा है (राम और सुग्रीव)। दंड उन्हें मिलना चाहिए। यह तर्क रावण का ध्यान हनुमान से हटाकर राम की ओर मोड़ देता है। विभीषण जानते हैं कि राम से युद्ध तो अवश्यंभावी है, इसलिए वे रावण के क्रोध को सही दिशा (युद्ध क्षेत्र) में मोड़ने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं ताकि हनुमान बच जाएं।
