साधुर्वा यदिवा ऽसाधुः परैरेष समर्पितः ।
ब्रुवन् परार्थं परवान् न दूतो वधमर्हति ।

sādhurvā yadivā 'sādhuḥ paraireṣa samarpitaḥ |
bruvan parārthaṃ paravān na dūto vadhamarhati ॥5-52-19॥
Translation
"Whether he is honest or dishonest, he is sent by others. Speaking for the sake of others and being dependent on others, a messenger does not deserve death."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"यह साधु (सज्जन) हो या असाधु (दुर्जन), इसे दूसरों (शत्रुओं) ने भेजा है। दूसरों के लिए बोलने वाला और पराधीन (दूसरों के अधीन) यह दूत वध के योग्य नहीं है।"
English Commentary
Vibhishana elaborates on the concept of diminished responsibility for agents. A messenger is 'paravān' (dependent/subject to another's will) and 'paraireṣa samarpitaḥ' (sent/commissioned by others). Therefore, his personal moral quality—whether he is 'sādhu' (good) or 'asādhu' (bad)—is irrelevant to his diplomatic status. Since he speaks 'parārthaṃ' (for another's interest), the accountability for his words and mission lies with his master. Killing the messenger for the message (or the actions mandated by the mission) is logically and ethically flawed.

यह श्लोक 'दूत' की परिभाषा और मर्यादा को स्पष्ट करता है। दूत का अपना कोई स्वतंत्र अस्तित्व या विचार नहीं होता; वह 'परवान्' (दूसरे के अधीन) होता है। वह जो भी कहता है या करता है ('ब्रुवन् परार्थं'), वह अपने स्वामी के आदेश से करता है। इसलिए, संदेश की कठोरता या दूत के व्यक्तिगत चरित्र ('साधु वा असाधु') के आधार पर उसे दंडित नहीं किया जा सकता। विभीषण यहाँ 'एजेंसी' (Agency) के सिद्धांत का प्रयोग कर रहे हैं—कर्ता कोई और है, यह तो मात्र वाहक है।
