Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अन्वीयमानो रक्षोभिर्ययौ सुखमरिन्दमः ।
हनुमांश्चारयामास राक्षसानां महापुरीम् ।

Anvīyamāno rakṣobhiryayau sukhamarindamaḥ । Hanumāṃścārayāmāsa rākṣasānāṃ mahāpurīm । । ॥5-53-19॥
Translation
Followed by the Rakshasas, the tamer of enemies (Hanuman) went happily and proceeded to observe the great city of the Rakshasas.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राक्षसों द्वारा पीछे-पीछे चलाए जाते हुए, शत्रुओं का दमन करने वाले हनुमान जी सुखपूर्वक चले और राक्षसों की उस महापुरी का निरीक्षण करने लगे।
English Commentary
This verse is full of irony. The prisoner Hanuman is described as walking 'sukham' (happily/comfortably). Usually, a captive is fearful and distressed, but Hanuman, the 'Arindamah' (tamer of foes), was fearless. He walked ahead while the guards followed, almost resembling a king escorted by his retinue rather than a prisoner under guard. 'Cārayāmāsa' indicates he actively observed or surveyed the city. He scrutinized the great city of the Rakshasas not with the eyes of a victim, but with the sharp gaze of a scout. His happiness stemmed from the fact that the enemy was playing right into his hands, allowing him to complete his mission.

यह श्लोक विरोधाभास से भरा है। बंदी हनुमान 'सुखम् ययौ' (सुखपूर्वक चले)। सामान्यतः बंदी दुखी और भयभीत होता है, किन्तु 'अरिंदमः' (शत्रुदमन) हनुमान निर्भय थे। वे आगे चल रहे थे और रक्षक पीछे—जैसे कोई राजा अपने अंगरक्षकों के साथ चल रहा हो। 'चारयामास' का अर्थ है उन्होंने नगरी को देखा/जाँचा। वे एक पर्यटक या निरीक्षक की भांति लंका की भव्यता और उसकी कमजोरियों को देख रहे थे। उनकी मानसिक स्थिति 'सुख' की थी क्योंकि वे राम का कार्य कर रहे थे और उनका उद्देश्य सिद्ध हो रहा था।
