चत्वरेषु चतुष्केषु राजमार्गे तथैव च ।
घोषयन्ति कपिं सर्वे चारीक इति राक्षसाः ।

Catvareṣu catuṣkeṣu rājamārge tathaiva ca । Ghoṣayanti kapiṃ sarve cārīka iti rākṣasāḥ । । ॥5-53-22॥
Translation
At crossroads, in squares (quadrangles), and on the royal highways, all the Rakshasas were proclaiming about the monkey, identifying him as a "spy."

चौराहों पर, चार खंभों वाले स्थानों (मंडपों) पर और राजमार्गों पर सभी राक्षस उस वानर (हनुमान) के बारे में घोषणा कर रहे थे कि यह 'जासूस' (चारीक) है।
English Commentary
The Rakshasas publicly branded Hanuman as a 'charika' (spy). This terminology is significant because, in ancient warfare, spies were often subject to execution or severe torture. Ravana's intent was to instill fear in the populace and demonstrate the consequences of infiltration. They paraded him like a common criminal at every busy junction ('catvareṣu' and 'catuṣkeṣu'). The irony lies in their proclamation; while they labeled him a spy to demean him, he was functionally a 'Duta' (messenger) carrying Rama's authority. This public display was intended to strip him of his dignity, but it only served to advertise his presence to the entire city.

राक्षसों ने हनुमान जी को 'चारीक' (जासूस) घोषित कर दिया था। यह शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि युद्ध के नियमों के अनुसार जासूस को मृत्युदंड या कठोर दंड दिया जाता है। रावण का उद्देश्य जनसामान्य के मन में भय उत्पन्न करना था कि जो भी लंका में घुसपैठ करेगा, उसका यही हश्र होगा। वे हनुमान जी को एक साधारण अपराधी की तरह घुमा रहे थे। 'चत्वरेषु' और 'चतुष्केषु' बताते हैं कि भीड़भाड़ वाले हर प्रमुख स्थान पर यह मुनादी करवाई गई। विडंबना यह है कि जिसे वे जासूस कहकर अपमानित कर रहे थे, वह वास्तव में एक 'दूत' था जो राम का संदेश लाया था।
