वर्जयित्वा महातेजा विभीषणगृहं प्रति ।
क्रममाणः क्रमेणैव ददाह हरिपुङ्गवः ।

॥५-५४-१६॥
Varjayitvā mahātejā vibhīṣaṇagṛhaṃ prati । Kramamāṇaḥ krameṇaiva dadāha haripuṅgavaḥ । । ॥5-54-16॥
Translation
Excluding the house of Vibhishana, the strictly orderly Great Monkey (Hanuman) of great luster went forward and burned the mansions in sequence.

महातेजस्वी और वानरश्रेष्ठ हनुमान जी ने विभीषण के घर को छोड़कर, क्रम से आगे बढ़ते हुए (अन्य सभी के) भवनों को जला दिया।
English Commentary
This is a pivotal verse illustrating Hanuman's discernment (Viveka). Even amidst the chaos of arson, he consciously spares Vibhishana's house. This act acknowledges Vibhishana's righteous stance in Ravana's court where he argued against killing the messenger. It emphasizes that Hanuman's war is against Adharma, not against the location itself. The phrase kramamāṇaḥ (proceeding in order) further reinforces that the destruction was a controlled, disciplined military operation, not a frenzy of unguided rage.

यह श्लोक हनुमान जी के विवेक और 'कृतज्ञता' का परिचायक है। लंका दहन के उस भीषण क्रोध और उथल-पुथल में भी उन्हें याद रहा कि विभीषण ने रावण की सभा में उनका पक्ष लिया था और वे धर्म के मार्ग पर हैं। 'वर्जयित्वा' (छोड़कर) शब्द बताता है कि यह विनाश अंधा नहीं था, बल्कि लक्षित था। सज्जन और भक्त को संकट के समय भी सुरक्षा मिलती है, यह इस घटना का आध्यात्मिक संदेश है। हनुमान जी ने विवेकपूर्वक शत्रु और मित्र (या संभावित भक्त) में भेद किया।
