Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
संजज्ञे तुमुलः शब्दो राक्षसानां प्रधावताम् ।
स्वगृहस्य परित्राणे भग्नोत्साहगतश्रियाम् ।
नूनमेषो ऽग्निरायातः कपिरूपेण हा इति ।

॥५-५४-२५॥
Saṃjajñe tumulaḥ śabdo rākṣasānāṃ pradhāvatām । Svagṛhasya paritrāṇe bhagnotsāhagaśriyām । Nūnameṣo 'gnirāyātaḥ kapirūpeṇa hā iti । । ॥5-54-25॥
Translation
A tumultuous noise arose among the Rakshasas running to save their own houses, their enthusiasm broken and their glory lost, crying—"Alas! Surely this is the Fire God himself who has come in the form of a monkey!"
हिंदी अनुवाद
अपने घरों को बचाने के लिए दौड़ते हुए, उत्साहहीन और श्रीहीन हुए राक्षसों का भारी कोलाहल होने लगा—"हाय! निश्चय ही यह अग्निदेव ही कपि (वानर) के रूप में आये हैं।"
English Commentary
The realization dawns upon the Rakshasas that they are facing a supernatural force. Their cry, "Surely this is Agni in the form of a monkey," marks a shift from arrogance to superstitious terror. The descriptors bhagnotsāha (broken enthusiasm) and gataśriyām (lost glory) indicate total demoralization. They represent the moment when an enemy realizes the battle is not just physical but cosmic. The chaos (tumulaḥ śabdo) reflects the breakdown of order within the city as survival becomes the only priority.

राक्षसों का भ्रम अब टूट रहा है। जो पहले हनुमान जी को केवल एक साधारण वानर समझ रहे थे, अब उनके पराक्रम और अग्नि के प्रकोप को देखकर उन्हें 'अग्निदेव' का अवतार मान रहे हैं। 'भग्नोत्साह' (टूटे हुए उत्साह वाले) और 'गतश्रियाम्' (जिनकी शोभा चली गई है) विशेषण बताते हैं कि उनका मनोबल पूरी तरह ध्वस्त हो चुका है। यह अहसास कि वे किसी दैवीय शक्ति से लड़ रहे हैं, पराजय की पहली निशानी है। उनका "हा" (हाय) कहना उनके हताशापूर्ण विलाप को दर्शाता है।
