लङ्कां समस्तां सन्दीप्य लाङ्गूलाग्निं महाबलः ।
निर्वापयामास तदा समुद्रे हरिसत्तमः ।

॥५-५५-१॥
Laṅkāṃ samastāṃ sandīpya lāṅgūlāgniṃ mahābalaḥ । Nirvāpayāmāsa tadā samudre harisattamaḥ । । ॥5-55-1॥
Translation
Having set the entire Lanka ablaze, that best of monkeys, the mighty one, then extinguished the fire of his tail in the ocean.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सम्पूर्ण लंका को जलाकर, उन महाबली वानरश्रेष्ठ (हनुमान) ने तब अपनी पूंछ की आग को समुद्र में बुझाया।
English Commentary
Sarga 55 opens with the aftermath. After the frenzied action of burning the city, Hanuman proceeds to the practical act of extinguishing his tail in the ocean. Even though immune to the burns due to Sita's boon, the fire was physically real. Dipping the tail in the ocean symbolizes the cooling down of his anger and the completion of the destructive phase of his mission.

अपना कार्य सिद्ध करने के पश्चात हनुमान जी ने अपनी पूंछ में लगी आग को शांत किया। यद्यपि सीता जी के आशीर्वाद से उन्हें अग्नि से जलन नहीं हो रही थी, परंतु भौतिक रूप से अग्नि को बुझाना आवश्यक था। समुद्र, जो लंका के चारों ओर था, अब हनुमान जी के लिए शीतलता का स्रोत बना। यह 'इतिश्री' (कार्य समाप्ति) का सूचक है।
