यदर्थमयमारम्भस्तत्कार्यमवसादितम् ।
मया हि दहता लङ्कां न सीता परिरक्षिता ।

mayā hi dahatā laṅkāṃ na sītā parirakṣitā ॥5-55-10॥
Translation
The very purpose for which this entire endeavor was undertaken has been ruined; for while burning Lanka, I did not safeguard Sita.

जिसके लिए यह सारा उद्योग (प्रयास) आरम्भ किया गया था, वह कार्य ही नष्ट हो गया; क्योंकि लंका को जलाते समय मैंने सीता की रक्षा नहीं की।
English Commentary
Here, Hanuman contemplates the tragic irony between the means and the ends. The primary objective (the end) was finding and ensuring the safety of Sita, while burning Lanka was merely a punitive action (the means) against the Rakshasas. He realizes that in his zeal to punish the enemy, he neglected the safety of the primary objective. This represents a profound self-critique by a devotee; he considers his military victory a failure because he believes he did not take specific precautions to shield Sita before igniting the city. It underscores the necessity of constant mindfulness regarding one's core duty amidst chaos.

यहाँ हनुमान जी साधन और साध्य (Means and Ends) के बीच के विरोधाभास पर चिंतन कर रहे हैं। उनका मुख्य उद्देश्य (साध्य) सीता जी की खोज और सुरक्षा था, और लंका दहन (साधन) केवल राक्षसों को भयभीत करने के लिए था। परन्तु, उन्हें अब प्रतीत हो रहा है कि साधन के प्रयोग में वे साध्य को ही भूल बैठे। यह एक भक्त की सूक्ष्म आत्म-समीक्षा है। वे अपनी विजय को विजय नहीं मानते क्योंकि उन्हें लगता है कि उन्होंने सीता जी के सुरक्षा के उपाय किए बिना ही नगर में आग लगा दी। यह श्लोक कर्तव्य पालन में सतर्कता के महत्त्व को रेखांकित करता है।
