यदि दग्धा त्वियं लङ्का नूनमार्यापि जानकी ।
दग्धा तेन मया भर्तुर्हतं कार्यमजानता ।

yadi dagdhā tviyaṃ laṅkā nūnamāryāpi jānakī |
dagdhā tena mayā bharturhataṃ kāryamajānatā ॥5-55-9॥
Translation
If this Lanka is burnt, then surely the noble Janaki is also burnt. Therefore, unknowingly, I have destroyed the purpose of my Master.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि यह लंका जल गयी है, तो निश्चय ही आर्या जानकी भी जल गयी होंगी। अतः (क्रोध के वशीभूत होकर परिणाम को) न जानते हुए मैंने अपने स्वामी का कार्य नष्ट कर दिया है।
English Commentary
Hanuman is suddenly seized by deep despair and guilt immediately after his spectacular feat of burning Lanka. He realizes that fire does not distinguish between friend and foe. The word 'ajānatā' (unknowingly) is crucial here; it highlights how anger or extreme emotion can cloud judgment/intellect (viveka), leading one to inadvertently sabotage their own goal. Hanuman fears that in his rage against the Rakshasas, he has destroyed the very object of his mission—Sita. This verse marks a sharp psychological transition from the triumph of a warrior to the anxiety of a devoted servant fearing he has failed his master, Rama.

हनुमान जी यहाँ घोर विषाद और आत्मग्लानि से भर उठे हैं। लंका दहन के अपने पराक्रम के तत्काल बाद, उनका ध्यान इस भयानक संभावना की ओर जाता है कि अग्नि मित्र और शत्रु में भेद नहीं करती। 'अजानता' शब्द यहाँ अत्यंत महत्त्वपूर्ण है, जो दर्शाता है कि क्रोध के आवेश में व्यक्ति विवेक खो देता है और अनजाने में ही अपना अहित कर बैठता है। हनुमान जी को लगता है कि जिस सीता की खोज के लिए उन्होंने समुद्र लांघा, उन्हीं का अंत अपने ही हाथों कर दिया। यह श्लोक विजय के क्षण में उत्पन्न हुए भय और जिम्मेदारी के भारी बोझ को दर्शाता है।
