विनष्टा जानकी नूनं न ह्यदग्धः प्रदृश्यते ।
लङ्कायां कश्चिदुद्देशः सर्वा भस्मीकृता पुरी ।

vinaṣṭā jānakī nūnaṃ na hyadagdhaḥ pradṛśyate |
laṅkāyāṃ kaściduddeśaḥ sarvā bhasmīkṛtā purī ॥5-55-12॥
Translation
Surely Janaki has perished, for no spot is seen in Lanka that remains unburnt; the entire city has been reduced to ashes.
हिंदी अनुवाद
निश्चय ही जानकी नष्ट हो गयी हैं, क्योंकि लंका में कोई भी ऐसा स्थान नहीं दिखाई देता जो जला न हो; पूरी नगरी भस्म कर दी गयी है।
English Commentary
This verse presents the visual evidence driving Hanuman's despair. He looks around and sees nothing but fire and ash. The phrase 'sarvā bhasmīkṛtā purī' (the whole city is turned to ash) justifies his deduction that Sita must be dead. It illustrates how, in a state of panic, empirical evidence (the massive fire) reinforces the worst-case scenario in the mind. Although the Ashoka Vatika was actually divinely protected, amidst the smoke and chaos, Hanuman cannot verify this immediately, leading him to believe that the total destruction he unleashed has consumed the innocent along with the guilty.
हिंदी टीका
यह श्लोक हनुमान जी के भय का 'प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण' प्रस्तुत करता है। वे अपनी आँखों से देख रहे हैं कि सर्वत्र केवल अग्नि और राख है। 'सर्वा भस्मीकृता पुरी' - यह वाक्यांश उनकी निराशा की गहराई को दर्शाता है। जब मन आशंकाओं से घिरा हो, तो आँखों देखी परिस्थिति (चारों ओर आग) भी नकारात्मक निष्कर्ष (सीता की मृत्यु) को ही सत्य मान लेती है। यद्यपि अशोक वाटिका सुरक्षित थी, परन्तु धुएं और लपटों के बीच हनुमान जी को उस क्षण वह दिखाई नहीं दे रहा है, जिससे उनका विषाद चरम पर पहुँच गया है।
